Hi there

I've just bought a set of 16'' wheels to use over the winter on my 993 c2. Does anyone have any advice re winter tyres? I can't seem to get any info on what is best to fit.

Tyre sizes are 205/55/16 front and 245/45/16 rear

Any advice much appreciated

Keith

I have Nokian WR G2 N0 in 205/55/16 and 225/50/16 fitted to 7 and 8 inch "Cup Winterrad" wheels respectively on my C2 (for those interested, the back-end now feels much more "old school" compared to my 225/40/18+265/35/18 Pirelli Rosso summer set). I ran this set of tyres on a Mercedes CLK last year and cruised past 4x4's with "low-profile sporty summer tyres" on fresh and packed snow and ice. They also work just fine on warmer days (as they are not an extreme Alpine compound - so city Scandinavians often use them all year round). If you want to cope with lots of snow (e.g. a trip to the alps), then it is best to get a dedicated snow tyre. For lowland UK winters (a few snowy days and slush, plenty of frost and rain) then a less extreme (all weather) compound such as WR G2 can work well. Size 245/45/16 is I think for a 9 inch wheel, I don't think you will find a snow/winter compound in this size. Martin

I've run Kumho I-zen KW17s on my 16" winter cups for the last four or five winters and find them really good in all conditions. They're not as good as summer tyres on dry or wet tarmac for sure but it's acceptable, however, they give really good grip on lose or packed snow and are reasonable on ice. They're also not too noisy. I know what you mean about the old school feel but more to the point, as the rears are only 8" wide and have a 70mm offset they sit much further in than my summer wheels so also give an old school look, not unlike a 356 in fact.
