993 wont start

My 993 is currently laid up in a dry garage for the winter. I went to start it a week or so ago and it turns over but does not seem to want to start/fire. I can smell fuel coming through the exhaust after I have turned it over.

Before I get a garage or the AA to come and have a look is there anything relatively easy that I can check. The car has an aftermarket Alarm/Immobiliser but that has been fitted for at least 5 years. I have also just put in 20 litres of fresh fuel.
 
Thanks for that, I have done what I can to check the immobiliser is disabling correctly. If the immobobiliser is not disabling the car will not turn over the way it is set up.
 
DME Relay would be my first choice. Every 993 owner should carry a spare. Even though you can smell petrol through the exhaust it is an easy thing to check and can be swapped in seconds. Where are you located? Maybe one of us can pop round with a spare if you don't have one.
 
Thanks for the suggestion and the kind offer. I am located in Scotland, close to the Forth Road Bridge. Assuming there is nobody that can lend me one should I just buy one and try plugging it in. In it located in the fuse box? Does this relay control the fuel pump?
 
Try the battery.... connect to another via jump leads... try that, 993's are renowned for needing a heavy load at startup... my old 993, failed to start after 3 hrs with the door lights on... ( Cleaning it)
 
Thanks Charlie, its a relatively new battery and its kept on a trickle charger so I am sure its not the battery. This DME relay does look like its worth a try though.

 
The original DME relay was a 944 part and was prone to sporadic failure, resulting in various symptoms, including not starting and cutting out while driving.

The 944 was replaced with a new part bearing a 993 number. Check which one is in your car; if it's the 993 part then it is not likely to be the cause of your problem but it's not impossible of course. It's located in the main fusebox, this link shows which one http://p-car.com/diy/relay/

I don't have a spare but I live just outside Falkirk and could pop over at the weekend and we could swop over the one that's in my car if you want.

 
I have just checked and it is the older relay with the part number starting 944. If you would be able to let me try your relay at the weekend that would be great. I am only about 4 miles from the Kirkardine Bridge. If its not convenient I will just buy one as it sounds like it would be sensible to replace it anyway.
 
It sounds a likely candidate.

I can get over at the weekend no problem. If you want to pm me with your address and we can sort out a time. If nothing else you will at least be able to eliminate it but I would recommend getting a new one either way, just for future piece of mind. It can be very embarrassing being stuck at the side of the road waiting for the relay to decide it's going to start working again.

I got the car running today, it turned out to need a replacement fuel pump.

Did you have the fuel pump replaced/repaired? If so, if you dont mind me asking, how much did this cost? Always good to know !!!
 
I replaced the fuel pump. Its not a difficult job, but it is fiddly and you need to make sure you have a way of stopping the petrol pouring out of the tank when you disconnect it. It is also much easier if you have a pit or a safe way of lifting the car becuase the pump is located in a small hatch under the floor.

I priced the new pump from porsche and they quoted me about £260, I then got hold of the bosche part number and my local garage ordered the part direct from bosche and it cost about £130. Since I did it myself I did not pay for any labour but would imagine it would take between 1 and 2 hours for a competant mechanic (it took me longer).
