Hello in the market for a 993, been looking at what you guys and girls have been writing, should i only buy a manual? should i stay away from targas? which would be the best colour combo? been told no white or yellow, any helpfull replys would be gratefull.

Hi,
Good choice a 993 - on your manual vs tiptronic question: Personally I can't understand why anyone would buy a driver's car like a Porsche and not want maximum possible driver involvement (ie manual). But I can also accept that I've never had the pleasure of driving a tip and so I don't know what I'm missing.

Colour: Only reason I might get tempted to change my car. I waited until I could find the colour combination I wanted (Black with grey or black) but actually now I'm used to the car I rather wish I'd gone bolder (like guards red, or .... just look at that gorgous Speed-Yellow car Helen G has just bought - see other thread on 993 forum)

Manual & Varioram for a pushed hands on driving experience. I think the rest is very personal & something no one else can assist you with...

Viel Glück!

All 993's are great cars.... as I'm sure everyone on here will agree - Prefer manual box myself but have driven a tiptronic and they are v easy to get on with. Usual owner preference with colours - I looked for ages for a black one and couldn't find one so went for dark blue. I have a targa and find it a perfect compromise

Try the different models out before narrowing your choice down. Having decided the 993 was the one for me (911 nut since childhood), I tried the coupe and targa, but not the cabrio before buying. In line with Mark's view, I cannot understand buying a drivers's car without full driving involverment and so it had to be a manual and two wheel drive for me. I preferred the look of the glass roof targa and found that the light and airy cabin made for a more enjoyable driving environment. The combination of this, the condition and colour of the car I bought (arctic silver, black leather) were the main issues which dictated my decision. Some people fit strut braces to make the front end of the targa stiffer, but having driven my car on a track I suspect the vast majority of drivers would be hard pushed to distinguish the targa from a coupe and I have not found this necessary. I understand the glass roof is a casette which is bolted into the roof opening and so this would involve additional cost over the coupe if this goes wrong but I presume this is the only additonal cost referred to by Maurice. I would say try them out, buy on condition and get an independent inspection before parting with your money.

All good advice from the others - I'll fly the flag for Tiptronics for a moment:-

I bought my 993 Tiptronic largely on provenance - good condition and solid history - and both those were more important at the time than colour or gearbox configuration.

Having said that, the Tip is very easy to live with because you have the best of both worlds - leave it in auto if you're in traffic or just feeling lazy, or slip it into manual to squirt past something or just to "drive" it in a more involved fashion! (Also, my partner is used to an automatic, so on the rare occasion that she can prise the keys away from me, she prefers the auto mode...)

The good news is that, even in manual mode, you can't stall it by trying to pull off in the same gear you came to rest in (it automatically defaults to second gear, whether you're in manual or auto mode), and it'll change up for you if you hit the red line and are having too much fun to notice!

True, it's only a 4-speed box but it's well spaced and you won't need a 5th, not in the UK!

Incidentally, and don't feel obliged even to look, but mine is for sale - see my earlier posting on this page!

Thanks for all replys, i think i should go with the manual (driver enjoyment) and the silver /black leather maybe ?
currently residing in perth australia, thinking i would get a better porsche over here due to weather, but alas no there like hens teeth, lots of 911s a couple of 964s very tatty! or over priced exampels like one in the west australian newspaper reads: Porsche 993 C4s 97 zenith blue 71,000 kms (44000mls) new tyres mint $122,750.00 which converts to £53,369.00GPB .
I think i should have purchased in uk and shipped!!!
