993TT Gurgling sound after cold starting

Wondered if anyone had any ideas on a noise - not necessarily a problem on my 1996 993Turbo. On startup from cold, there is a gurgling sound coming from the rear, offside quarter. It lasts for approx. 1-2mins, or 1/2 mile, and then is gone. It started some months ago, and has not caused any issues. Independent porsche specialist said nothing to worry about, but am intrigued to what it might be.

Paul,

As far as I can tell it seems to be a common issue - albeit not on all cars - but common nevertheless. It's all to do with the oil circulation and seems to be a mix of viscosity and temperature. Some people seem to get it soon after a service, some never get it at all. My 964 does it sometimes - but not every time. It's just one of those air cooled quirks I'm afraid.

Regards

Dave

It's a standard 993 feature. It's the oil moving around the pipes from the oil tank (inside the offside rear panel just behnd the driver's seat) through the cill to the oil cooler in the offside front wing.

In my car it seems to happen later than you describe. For me it's after a few minutes but before the oil thermostat has opened. Also seems to be affected by the oil level (happens more when I've just topped the oil up than when it's getting lower on the gauge)

Had this happen on a 993 C2 i was purchasing, advised by Independant to change oil to

mobil one...................Guess what gurgling disappeared..............

Hope this helps

Cheers Al

This topic came up quite recently - Oil circulating seemed the resaon, mine does it and always has.

Try doing a search.

It was the oil change itself, not the particular oil. I use Mobile 1 all the time and after some change the gurgle can be there, and after the next it can go. But as I say above I think it's more related to the oil level.

i had to have a new oil line fitted on my 964 a while ago, after i picked it up i had this noise, couldnt live with it so took it back to garage after a month and they changed the hose they got from europarts to genuine porsche one and noise went away...seemed the angle of the metal end was slightly wrong. may be worth checking that.

Apparently there is a small oil flow from the reservoir to the cooler (at the front) up until the engine gets up to temperatre, when the valve opens and allows far more oil flow through to the cooler. This is sometimes heard as a hissing or gurgling type noise ...

What we her is the oil flowing through the system.

If the car is stationary so there is no air flow over the oil radiator, the oil temperature which dipped when the oil radiator valve opened, will again rise to the point where the radiator fan will then start --- and this should then hold a stable but slightly high oil temperature.

At this point the front offside wing becomes warm and the fan ca be heard ...

Of course, when working hard and the oil coller working as it should, it is quite normal for the vented heat to warm the wing --- but when the car is moving the fan should not be required ..
