993TT intercooler pipe

The LH intercooler pipe came off the other day during an overtaking move. The engine faltered, and I managed to coast into a layby where I managed to reposition the pipe and clip, though unsatisfactorily. I am worried it could happen again. Car is booked into Lovetts tomorrow. Is this a common problem? Any better solutions? Would it have damaged the engine?
Thanks! Richard.

This hapens to nearly every 993 turbo owner, including myself about 2 years ago. Over a period of time the hoses perish around where the clamp holds it in place, If it was an early hose, its almost inevitable that this will hapen, im pretty sure that all new pressure hoses have now been improved, and no I very much doubt that any damge has been done. My god though its worrying when your dash lights up like a christmas tree and smoke starts bellowing out of the back. It was horid.

I have been told you can tell the later ones as they are orange at both ends, I have one of mine at present is cracked at the very top where the jubille clip gets secured, the garage said its ok to drive as its just the lip, I have a replacement on my garage floor, just picking up the courage to fit them (i am going to replace both sides)

Got them from Gert

Definitely get ur turbos checked , when the pipe comes off they can reach enormous revs and run hot , even turn blue..........most time u get away with it but if u havent first cut is the cheapest! intercooler pipes were modified some time ago with 'reinforced ends' they cost abt £170 each and clearly wud be a good time to be replaced , heat passing over the old one off wont have done much for it ............its should nt happen , though of course it does , usually if cars been standing not used much and oil has got in those pipes

Dont worry richard, im sure your turbo is fine. You could have it checked out but they will charge you for the pleasure, and if they are realy nasty they will probably say, im ever so sorry richard but your turbo is on its way out. I had to drive for almost a mile before I could pull over because of no layby. 2 years on and my tubos are still fine.

Its not how far u drive after its off , theres virtually no pressure and they re just abt spinning free, its how fast it turns when the pipe lets go ............if u can see they ve actually changed colour, u know its been too hot , then u decide what u want to do , current refurb abt £500 per turbo , new turbo if spindle breaks from heatsink anything between £1200 and £2000 according to where u go ......quick look to check less than the latter which u might prevent , bury ur head in the sand and pick the bits out of everywhere if they do let go !Lovett s well experienced to tell by looking i wud ave thought!

Fair enough, I was in between 4000-5000 rpm when the hose came off so thats prety high, ive had the engine droped on many ocastions since and the turbos have not been an insue. Im sure PC cambridge or PC solihull especially, would have picked up on this. Maybe im just a lucky guy and got away with no damage. Touch wood.[8|]

NO APPOLOGIES FOR BANGING ON ABT THIS ...................u have been lucky, i was nt recently, have driven twin turbos for a wee while and itv s the 1 st time ive totalled a turbo ,ie it was scrap!................if u were doing 4/5000 revs what do u think ur turbos were turning at? then multiply it ,with sudden loss of pressure up they go, u loose power, probaly stop to see why............. no cooling across anything.................heatsink just for luck....................i ll shut up now promise; Aet are very reliable, painstaking and do give a fair analysis ........if the turbos are too far gone they just wont touch them FWIW they seem to be the best at mom without naming other less reliable large Turbo Companies...............lets hope u dont need them ................next time u have an opportunity, do a leakage test .........will indicate if the whole show has been overheated and if remedy for engine needed or not

Good thread.Even though my car was late 97 it had the "old" hoses, so I upgraded about a year ago after reading a previous thread.

Sorry ,not the intention .........just think of me as your Bank Manager and u need the dosh to rebuild!

I d be a great Bank Manager , cud nt resist requests for anything like that ................go get the one resting at Fearnsport , Silver , not going to see one around that price agn ! Engines fresh , beautifully set up great list of owners !

Yup, also had the 'Cristmas Tree' effect. Dashed scary, initially followed by the sight of pound signs....

Fitted the new pipes, with the orange ends and has been fine since. [:)]

Changed mine a couple of years ago to the latest ones with orange ends, the old ones had gone all soft where they fit on the turbos. Remember, preventative maintenance is essential on these cars if you want to keep the running costs affordable. It cost about £200 for both hoses back then, better than a turbo/engine rebuild!

I must check this. Recently my oil pressure values or something like that can't remember but neeeded an oil drain and reset of values and all ok. Glad it was nowt else.

Anyone got leaky rocker covers. Mine is dripping a little on to my exhaust.
