993TT, some questions..

fix

New member
About to buy a 993TT, and found some..
And since they not close to me, I got of lots of pictures.

First thing I wonder,

1996 993TT, Black

In trunk, when most is removed you can see grey/white paint on the sides ??
And some messy glue or something at the suspensionmounts + sides..

On my 993 C4 I can't remember any grey paint ?

So the question is: Has it been into some serious accident ?
Seller says no.. or he don't know.

Will try to post pictures tomorrow.

On both cars to get some extra input for you guys to help me decide.

Regards
Patrik

You would expect to see the paper vehicle specification label still intact on the underside of the trunk lid if it is the original lid. Can suspect a frontal accident repair/replacement if not there.

Here is the picture..

Left + Right side have glue/mess of somekind
+ there is sprayed some grey/white paint..

Is this normal ?

Yellow messy stuff is rust protection, not from Porsche, owner had this done. (even under car)

Is this a problem ( Rust mark.. )

Or is it just to lift the rubber and look ?
Maybe it's quite normal ?

This is how it look under the engine.
Guess it looks quite ok, with no oil leaks ?

Is it normal to not have the cover installed ?

It seems Porsche didn't spray complete under the carpets etc. I have noticed this on a few and asked the question too!
The rust could be a real problem if not sorted correctly! Look more into to that! They do rust around the screens.
There should be a under tray cover on. Did they take it off for the photo to be taken?

Traycover ( under engine )

Don't know, guess it's removed permanently.
I've asked him if he removed it, waiting for answer.

Owner still has the engine tray.

Some people remove the engine tray cover permanently to aid cooling. If the seller doesn't have the cover, use it as a negotiating tool and you can pick up a second hand one from Flea Bay or one of the breakers.

The rust looks like it has been tackled, but it is possibly a sign of some more serious damage lurking under the windscreen seal.

As for the luggage compartment, most 993's don't have a lot of paint in the areas that don't show (finances were a little tight with Porsche in the 90's!), so I wouldn't be concerned about this.

With a car like the TT, I assume you are having it inspected? This should hilight any issues with the car, and you can use this information to negotiate or walk away if you are unhappy with anything.

The car has been at OPC for inspection by owner, and there nothing major.
Will try to call them this week for some extra questions.

Seller is quick with replys and taken +35 pictures for me, so it feels good.
Also answerd every question I had, car is documented well.
Nice history on car, few owners, 2 in Germany, 2 in Sweden and I'll would be the third.

Clutch is not chaged ( car has 100000 km ), so I'll guess it's soon time to change it.
Damage in windscreen ( stonechip )
And the the little rustmark shown in picture above.

Even the Porsche text at front breaks still white, so guess it hasn't been driven to hard.

Else it's look good in overall feeling.

Other thing I'm wonder about is the interior color,

It's Green...

First I didn't look at this car, but I must say that I got more and more impressed with the color.
But, is it stupid to buy one with green interior ?

The corrosion near the windscreen seal is indicative of a lot more corrosion around the windscreen aperture. This is exactly how mine looked. I didn't look too bad until I had the windscreen removed. This revealed a lot more corrosion underneath.

Plan on about £500 to have the screen removed and the corrosion fixed properly.

This is how it looks when I asked him to check it out for me.

Doesn't look that bad ?
Just a tiny mark of rust, guess I can fix it without removing the windscreen ?

Will take a close look around seal, and see if there is more.
He says this is the only spot.

Is it hard to remove the seal around windscreen ?
Need any tools ?
Is it glued ?

Hard to install new seal ?

Also got answers for the other pictues:

Engine tray: He removed it, and still have it.
Trunk: Yellow messy stuff , is from the rust protection ( it have been in a shop for that )

Right. To answer some of your questions.

1. Rust spot under windscreen/ rear screen.

This is a very common problem. Most 993s and 964s get this. It is not particularly serious if treated quickly and professionally. It looks from the photo as though yours has been "bodged" (attempted DIY repair). Total cost of repair ? Budget £300-£400.

The rubber strip peels off easily. That is not the problem. To do the job properly, you should remove the windscreen. That is bonded, and if it breaks during removal, the cost of a replacement windscreen is £1200, so make sure yours is insured before you have the job done.

2. White paint in boot.

This is totally normal. It just indicates the factory did not spray the boot with top coat. You should worry if this is not present.

3. Green interior

Wacky interior colours seem to be common in LHD cars. I personally love it. Overall, your car looks a good one. If you don't buy it, I will.

PS Ensure you get the engine tray with the car.

do they still have the original mufflers, looks like it has got bypass tubes on, is it still in Sweden? i got mine from there, very good export system for the cars ;)

Everything is still there,
Mufflers, Engine tray...

Next friday I'm trying to take a look at the car, it's 7hours drive or a nice flight for 1hour :)
Want to look a the interior color, but I think green could be ok.
It's not that Crazy... since it's quite dark it could be nice instead of black.

Anything special to look for ?

Hi

just on windscreen replacement someone mentioned £1200 for a screen ? where is that from as a genuine screen 993 is £660 plus vat with trim and seals....plus fitting £100 roughly £950 and you would be able to get an aftermarket screen for alot less.

Mike

Mine was a green tinted screen with aerial. Cost £1200 fitted - mind you Insurance company paid, not me, so I'm not too bothered..
