996 '02 disks and pads

The brake pads light on my 996 '02 comes on occasionally (generally when I am in reverse...). I'm assuming that when I take the car into an OPC that they'll say that the discs will need doing too. There is a slight lip on the front discs but apart from that, they look in good condition; tehy are clean with no scratches. How can you tell if the discs need doing too? I don't mind having them changed if they really need changing but not just because I am having new pads put on. Any recommendations/advice? Would having the pads (and/or discs) changed at an independant void the warranty? Thanks ...

Got my front discs and pads changed at an Independent (saved some £300+); why should they void your warranty if the inde uses all genuine parts? I have an OPC extended warranty too.

If u have a C2/C4 the disks when new are 28mm front and 24mm rear. Their limits (before they need to be replaced) are 26mm front and 22mm rear. You will need a brake disk slide gauge to test for this.

For the pads its 12mm front and 10.5mm rears when new, with 2mm wear limits.

Pads and disks are not warrantable items. But they are a doddle to replace yourself even if u have no experience. See below websites for help. At my first try it took me 2 hours or so for disks and pads for the front axle, with practice u can get it down to below 1 hour. Get the parts from www.Eurocarparts.com.

If you use OEM parts a wheel will cost you around £120 for a disk and pad. Around £40 less if you use non OEM disks (Sebra).

You will have to change pads if the disks need changing, although you wont need to change disks if you are only changing pads.

Good luck.

Thanks ... I'm not the DIY kind! I just don't have the time unfortunately so it will be OPC or an indi. It's looking like it is approx £1000 dics and pads all-round at an indi versus £2000 at OPC ... That's a big difference.

Or you could just order the disks and pads yourself and hand them over to a garage/indi and save yourself even more.
The parts should be around £500 and indis charge around £40-60ph...so could be at least a few hundred saved there (if you do need disks and pads all round)

I've just been quoted £1300 for discs and pads all round by an OPC. I would have thought less than £1000 at an indy

You're right, it's £1300 all-in from OPC. My mistake ... but the indi garages are pricing at £1000.
