996.2 Front Bonnet refuses to open

As a newish member of PCGB (144572) I have a 2004 996.2 Carrera Targa Tip S and (as of today) the front luggage bonnet refuses to open.

It's got the electric release button mechanism and I can hear it whirring in the boot, but it's just not releasing. The battery's fully charged and everything else is fine.

It has released once - but of course when I shut it it has then refused to re-open, plus I'd not be able to lock it afterwards.

Any ideas on a). what it might be; the "opener microswitch" perhaps?, and b). how to manually open the bonnet (a cable pull inside the wheel arch?)

Thanks in advance.

Chris

Welcome Chris!

The emergency release cable for 996s with electric releases is located just under the headlight mouting tray in the driver's side wheel arch. You have to pull back the wheel arch liner to reach it. This picture is with the headlight removed, but it will give you an idea of where you are aiming for. The pic is taken from the back of the wheel arch looking towards the front of the car.

Hopefully the locking wheel nut key isn't in the front compartment, as it is a lot easier to jack up the car and remove the wheel to access the cable.

I had a similar problem with mine being intermittent. Googling suggested it’s a fairly common fault and replacing the bonnet actuator seemed to be the consensus. I did that and touch wood, it’s been fine since.
