996 3.4 engine

Morning ,

I am in the need of a replacement engine for my 99 3.4, the engine I have has been rebuilt once by a company who no longer exist, I have the car back and it had a misfire on tick over , I agreed to another company to strip and inspect , what they found was oval bores and a cracked head again ! the advice they are giving me is to get a replacement engine.
Everyone I have spoken to is quoting me on an exchange unit , when in reality my unit is not serviceable , therefore I just want to buy either an engine that has history behind it or a recon engine .
Any suggestions would be welcome, I really really don't want to strip this car and sell parts as I have spent so much time and monies on her but I can not warrant the prices I am being quoted.

The cheapest, but not necessarily feasible in your case would be to strip the engine yourself. The liner(s) can be replaced by a specialist. The head will need to be sourced elsewhere.

Else you could start to contact some indies, they may have a donor car or spares.

If my engine ever fails I would replace with Porsche short engine. Have seen a few guys do this, but obviously your cylinder head problem makes it more complicated. Looked at Hartech and they seem v. good, but the cost is high. Obviously you would need a good indy to remove and replace engine. Owners choice, so good luck whatever you decide.

Might be worth a chat with Hartech, they will be able to give you options and advice. Whilst it might be pricey, I've also noticed Hartech rebuilds tens to carry a premium at resale and certainly people look for then. Do a search on 911uk and you'll be able to see some threads. Many indys could do the work, also depends on your plans for how long to keep car and what you want to invest

just talking to a chap at Hartech at minute , this one is a keeper in honesty, i promised it to one of my kids !

thanks

I think you have 2 options:
A used motor, as you have seen. These appear to be of the order of 5k. I'd allow 1500 for fitting (some contingency for a 'surprise', such as a water pump or clutch etc).

A rebuild is about 10k, again this should have some contingency for a suprise or two. Someone local is good, as you can keep dropping in for progress, return to if anything feels odd.

I think DIY is ... a tall order unless you are very, very competent. You will also need special tools. We do one every 2-3 months and we still have butterfly's when we start for the first time!

Hope this helps!

so after a good chat with Grant Hartech , he is sorting the block out , not as bad as I was told and well worth saving , the head is also salvageable and is being sorted ,

Hi Peter. I have the same problem. My 3.4 engine is making a nasty knocking noise [:(]. I have spoken to Grant at Hartech and the first chance I get to take it that's where my car is going. Apart from Autofarm I don't think I would bother looking elsewhere. Please post an update when your motor is sorted. Best regards. Zeusy.

Folks at Hartech top notch. They did a 6k makeover of my 3.4 engine a few years back. Very happy with work and comprehensive 6 page condition report of engine and car that goes with it. Worth every penny if its a keeper.
