996 Air Filter Recommendations?

Hi team,

I see the K&N Air Filter kit releases a few more horses from our engines. Is this worth getting or are there better systems out there??

Grateful for any advice.

Thanks.

Mani

Hi mANI
In my opinion there is nothing noticeable to be gained over the original air filter on a standard 996,
and as said say away from any oil related filters or you may regret it.
Just my 2p worth.

In my opinion they say you get more air flow. That's fine but unless you change the throttle body to 82mm it's like a bottle neck or the dartford tunnel. If anything they only slightly change the sound note. You definitely have to change the throttle and maybe a remap but I have heard that will adjust to new settings after a while.

A friend of mine has a brand new one of these for sale if interested. I'll get him to post here today if possible.

As per Geoff997's post , I have one of these which I will sell. It is pretty much as per Type911UK's photo above, except that it comes with the protective sleeve for the cone, just to make it a little less susceptible to dust and water.
I think it is fairly accepted that on it's own it is not going to produce any meaningful increase in power. However, it did seem to me to increase responsiveness.
My unit is effectively brand new - it has done less than 20 miles.
A short background to why it will be available:
I bought this K&N Unit together with a switchable sport exhaust, a few weeks ago, and had them both fitted together, and here's the problem: On it's own (with the exhaust switched off) the K&N sounds really good. However, when the exhaust is open there is something about the resonance of both my particular exhaust and the K&N together which was truly awful and, under full throttle, it sounded like a rusted out Morris Marina with a fist sized hole in the exhaust. I took the car back to have the K&N removed the very same day I picked it up.
I say again, had I not spent out on the exhaust, and had only fitted the K&N, then I would have been really pleased with it. But one of them had to go. And given that I was throwing some money down the drain, the cheaper option was to remove the K&N rather than the exhaust.
Let me know if you are interested. I paid £365, but obviously it is now technically used, although you wouldn't know it. I am North side of Crawley.

For interest, I have a BMC air filter fitted together with an IPD plenum, 200 cell headers, and larger 3.8 991 engine. On the tuner's Maha dyno, the BMC was the last item fitted and it produced an additional 7PS right at the top end.

Pieman7:

Yes sure. Get him to drop me a PM. Being butchered by the medics tomorrow, so he might not get any sense out of me for a couple of days :)

The only way to gain power is to baseline on a rolling road and go from there with bottomless pockets. Better gains vs cost would be weight reduction, suspension, tyres and brakes.

Pieman7,
Sorry, it appears that my PM was disabled (presumably because I've never used it).
Anyway it is fixed and I have sent you PM to which you should be able to reply - hopefully!
David

Pieman7,

Incase you still cannot get a PM through to me ( I can't even see where my inbox might be) here's my email address - david.oldridge@woodcote*****.com - as an anti autobot you need to substitute "group" for the asterisks

Regards,
