996 - Am I being mad?

Hi
I have recently been quite smitten by a early 996 which is for sale locally. I am coming from a 944 on which I do quite a lot of the work myself - I am an windturbine engineer so used to electrical & mechanical work.
There are loads of information resources for the 944 on the interweb - is there similar information for a 996 available? For example I have a pdf of the Porsche workshop manual and parts list for the 944.
Can I download a diagnostic programme for the OBDP?
I am aware of the pitfalls of early 996s and deep engine work is out of my league, but I would like to be able to do servicing and smaller work myself.
I would get the the car inspected before purchasing (although being in Cornwall this is proving quite hard), and I am not too worried about keeping up a stamped service history.
Any advice or experiences most welcome!
Thanks
Barnaby

You can download a PDF of the PET parts lists from here: http://www.porsche.com/uk/accessoriesandservice/porscheservice/originalparts/originalpartscatalogue/

A somewhat old, but usable PDF of the workshop manual: www.cannell.co.uk/Manuals.htm

The early C2 996 isn't OBD2 compliant, so most code readers and scanners will not pick up the Porsche-specific codes. The only proper Porsche diagnostic tool (apart from the factory tools) is the Durametric tester: www.durametric.com

HTH, and no, you aren't mad!
