996 and 993 values

Is it just me, or are we witnessing the early 996s becoming CHEAPER than the later 993s? Is this a rational market behaviour? Is the 996 an inferior car to the 993?

Ceejay,

This is a very touchy topic[;)].

They are completely different cars and should not really be measured on same scale. One reason people choose a 996 is because they want a car with a "modern feel". You would not buy a 993 if you were looking for this. As 996s get older they become less attractive on that dimension whereas 993s never had that appeal, so don't lose it as they get older.

Also: IMHO the 996 and 997 have a lot in common, so there is the factor that the early 997s are starting to become affordable to the mid-market and so depreciating the 996s

Hey Diesel,

IMHO that can only enhance its value...!

Let's face it, the black interiors are a bit bleak, the grey is a shade favoured by John Major, and blue doesn't go with Black!

"Metallic Black and Savannah Beige" - a truly outstanding combination, one that can only be enhanced with the presence of 4wd and a soft top!

[:D][:D]

I agree Neil - black interiors are a bit like a coal hole. [:)][:)]. Give me that wonderful light airy feeling that Savannah gives you any day. [;)][;)]. A marvellous striking contrast to any dark exterior colour, and also looks fantastic with Arena red.

Of course you could always go with boring black or grey.....[:'(][:'(].

To be fair, what would a 993 get on EBay...?

I know ebay is great for getting lots of stuff but a nine year old Porsche .... not sure.

If I was to bid - even if I did have a chance to meet the seller and see the car beforehand - I'd have to assume the car WOULD need lots of work, and factor that in accordingly.

Just a thought.

Completely unrelated markets. Price movements in one does not effect the other. The 996 is moving in relation to the 997. There is seen to be a line between 997 and 996 on one side and 993, 964, 3.2 etc on the other across which prices are not linked. Different type of buyer in each market.

hmm not so sure they are entitely different types of buyers. I set out to buy a 993 but couldn't see why I'd pay more for a car that was older and probably in worse condition (based on the few I saw) and so shifted to a 996. I admit that my use as a daily had a heavy influence upon that willingness to go "more modern" . I have used older 911's as dailies before and found the experience "difficult" . So far I have found no reason to regret the decision. I love the romance of the air cooled 911's but I can't beleive I am alone in seeing it as that and when it comes to handing over the cash being more rationale. I think that as this blurring occurs between 993's and 996's that we will see buyers willing to move to the 996. Not sure whether it will have a significant impact on the values of 996's though. Still plenty of people willing to pay over the odds for the older design ;-)

Higher miles 993s fetch no more than higher miles 996s as far as I can see.

The very best 993s will fetch a premium price for enthusiasts as said above its a supply and demand thing, more than an equivalent mileage 996.

A £20k 996 is a lot of car for the money (but get a PPI!)
