996 any problems to look for?

I am considering buying a second hand 996 that has had three owners but full PSH and looks in superb condition. It has 65K on the clock which is genuine. Are there any likely problems I should be aware of. I have read a report that someone had an IMS failure that required a full engine rebuild. What is an IMS failure? (sorry if I am being thick about this!)

Hi Michael,

I've moved this to the 996 forum, might get more advice there. Have a good read through the faqs and technical articles as well. [:)]

The IMS is the intermediate shaft. Think of it like a cambelt failure on a regular car. Typical damage if it fails will be similar hense the rebuild. There is a great resource of information for owners/prospective owners about all the possible engine faults that can occur on the Hartech website. Definitely worth a read but dont get yourself too downhearted.

Reading 'common' faults can make you think its the worst car in the world but really for 99% of owners it'll be the most reliable car they've ever owned. They built them well the 996's.

Which model are you looking at?

Take a look at our 996 Buyer's Checklist, which you can download from here: http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/tm.asp?m=269468
