996 Battery

Have got a 2002 C4S and my battery has started to fade! Does anyone know if this is normal after 4 years?

I spoke to one of the tech guys at OPC Hatfield and he reckons I should get Porsche Bristol to make a contribution, as the car was only bought from them a few months ago and they should have picked the weak battery up with there a million and one pre sale checks.

Porsche want about £85 for a new one, can I use any brand and get one from Halfords etc?
 
I put a 71 Ah Lion one from EuroCarParts in mine as I needed one yesterday (£45). Lifetime guarantee calcium battery. I'd previously planned on getting a 75 Ah Bosch Silver, you can get them from Costco for £65 I think. Replaced a Porsche 70 Ah.
 
What do you mean by fade ?

The battery is indeed checked in the checkist (under Fluid Levels #8 - Battery : Acid-Level and Condition))

They also check the charge on the battery (as a % of 100)

If the battery is the original battery, then tbh it's getting on - 4-5 years is the normal life of a battery in normal use. If left to get below 30% charge for any significant peroid of time then it will die much quicker.

Unless Porsche replace the battery FOC or contribute at least 50% then as the previous poster said, better to get a Bosch Silver or something to replace the MOLL (Porsche) battery as they are pretty crud anyway as batteries go. Halfords Silver batteries are also pretty good so I hear.

If you change yourself, don't forget to note the radio code .. :)

I have just replaced my battery on my C4, and it was just under 3 years old. OPC stated that was a typical lifetime for such a battery. Had to have it replaced immediately as travelling, so did not shop around. OPC charged approx £150 inc VAT for the battery (and note they will charge extra on top of that for half hour installation).

PS: can you let me know which OPC quoted £85, as that seems rather less than I paid. I thought there was supposed to be standard pricing?
 
It was probably £85+ fitting - at 1/2 Hr that's approx £60 - so there is your £150.00 (ish)

IMO an absolute rip off - the battery is twice the price it should be for a battery of this quality (low) and it does not take half an hour to undo 1 x 15mm bold and the 2 x 10mm bolts holding the terminals on, pull out the battery, put the new one in, put the 15mm bolt back, reconnect the 2 x 10mm terminal bolts, shut the boot - start the car ... job done.

PS - normal life for a quality battery these days is 4-5 years - the MOLL battery is an old design based on 'top up' unsealed compartments - most battery these days are sealed maintenance free types.

If you are changing yourself then take note of what it tells you to do in the owners handbook.
You basically need to have the key in the ignition to prevent the alarm going off when you disconnect the battery, and you may need the radio code.
(I haven't go the info to hand but it should be in the handbook - it is for the Boxster)
