996 c2 1998 - OBD Diagnostic type?

Guys - was looking to pick up a cheap hand scanner for the 996 but am unsure (even after reading up) whether the slew of OBD2 scanners on eBay will do the trick?

I gather the mech throttle C2's 98/99 aren't OBD2 and only Durametric tool (PC based) will work?

I'm no stranger to the VAGCOM software but not familiar with what's what with the porsche equivalent.

You are right that the UK 996's with mechanical throttle are not truly OBD2 compliant, and Durametric is about the only DIY option which gives you decent diagnostic and fault reading capabilities. Some cheap hand-held OBD2 scanners will read sensor vales, and some of the engine fault codes, but not the Porsche-specific ones, or pending codes.
