996 C4 to BOXSTER

Well I am sure I am going to get a lot of grief from the 996 gang, but I just haven't been able to get along with my 996 C4 for 10 months, so I tried the BOXSTER S and liked it.

So next week I be on here and of course change the avatar.

I did own one of 97 models when the first launched, nice car but underpowered then, 4 911's later and I am back........

Your sins are forgiven my son!

Welcome home

JCB..

You know it makes sense!

Just out of interest, what was it about the 996 that you couldn't get on with? I ask on behalf of those that harbour a desire to go from the Boxster to the 996 - not me off course. Unless maybe it's the GT3 or the TT....

mark, your post tends to negate the latest boxter v 911 discussion currently running in the letters section of gt purely porsche.

one C4S owner states in the september issue, 'how many people do you know that have switched to a boxter from a 911? i know of none'. doh!

good on yer pal, as others have already said, you know it makes sense!!!!

regards, glenn.

Unless maybe it's the GT3

That works for us.

Just come back from a DIY shopping trip in the S - huge compost bag in back, one in the front and the pots on the passenger seat.
You just have to own it for a while till the preciousness wears off.

Very interesting as I moved from a 944 Turbo to an S. The space is my main problem and having driven a 996 C4S around the track I was sold on it. Main problem is £75K!!!!

How do you deal with the lack of space?

Tom

Interesting, was thinking to change from my S to C4 or ideally C4S, even considering a targa. Am I wrong to think of moving on? Drove a turbo around Thruxton, and was utterly seduced, but I suppose that is another ball park! Absolutely love my car for now and thinking of getting a hard top to make it more complete all year round.

Hi Nick,

Well I think it depends on what you want from the 996. It does not feel like a sports car anymore in my opinion after having owned 4 911's the 993 is the best IMHO. In the 10 months of driving my 996 C4 I was trying to convince myself it was the car for me because I paid so mych money for it, but sadly its not so now £7k worse off !!!!!!!! a very bad mistake. I did feel that when I drove the BOXSTER 'S' it was more sporty, so that will be my 'baby' for the next 12months whilst I make my mind up, to buy a newer BOXSTER 'S' or go back to my 993 which I did like.

My advice, stick to your BOXSTER !!

Interesting thoughts Mark - I'm considering changing my 2.7 to either a 993 or used 996 - I have almost certainly ruled out the former on the grounds of the extra maintenance costs and the fact that the whole architecture and presentation of the 996 is more modern. My ideal spec would have sports seats, PSE, 18" Sport Designs and sports suspension (get the picture yet!). The same money would get me a much newer Boxster S with all the toys.

It is interesting to hear that you think the Boxster is more sporty. Do you mean that it is a more entertaining drive, more intimate, more enjoyable? All adjectives that everyone almost always goes on about with the 996!

I guess driving both would be the answer. I didn't think the S was a million miles away from the 2.7 when I drove them back to back. Paying all that money for a 996 does seem a waste if you get the same experience (or indeed better) with the S.

Hi Dapster,

Well since Thursday I have clocked up almost 500 miles in the BOXSTER 'S'. In my mind it feels more sporty, my 996 just felt like an overweight car, IMHO the newer 911's are too much like sports saloons which is not what I want; both my 964 and 993's I owned felt like sports cars.

As I say that IMHO, I will certainlt never get another 996 or the newer generation 911, its not for me. I will probably buy another 993 it had bullet proof reliability unlike my 996 I owned.

Hi Dapster ... I am on my 4th Boxster and my current MY03 "S" is the best yet [8D] I had previously owned 4 x 911's but no longer needed rear seats so thought I would try a Boxster in early 97. Never looked back since [:D] In 2002 my 3rd Boxster an "S" needed a new roof under warranty and PCGB loaned me a 996C2 for a week / 500 miles. By the end of the week I was thinking I would definitely be selling my Boxster for a 996 Cab I was that impressed. One mile back in the "S" I realised regardless of money or power differences the Boxster in all the key areas ie steering feel, handling, grip, ride comfort, clutch feel, gear change, left the C2 for dead IMO. The only 2 things the 996 had over the Boxster were power and sound effects [;)] Sound I sorted with a Roock Sports exhaust and the power well in my city life driving its never an issue and on our over congested motorways I can't use any of the 260bhp I have so the extra in the 996 would never be called into action anyway.

Bottom line 996 is a fabulous GT car and great if you need 2+2 format but the Boxster is without any doubt the more sporty driver and because it was designed with a clean sheet of paper by the best engineers in the world it was the best sports car in the world straight out of the box(ster) and after nearly 9 years still remains top of the crop.

Well by comparison to the 2 993's I have owned it compares well, if your asking between which one is better then that would be hard for me; I think they are both excellent cars.

The 993 did feel like a sports car, the 996 doesn't for me.
