996 C4 Transmission Failure

Hello everyone,

I need some help. I own an out-of-warranty 2000 (W) C4 Cab with 47k on the clock. Car returned from Dick Lovett (Swindon) on Friday (11th) with new clutch, flywheel, rear brakes, 5 year service, etc in exchange for £3000!! I have covered a careful (bedding in) 80 miles since. This afternoon, the transmission failed as I changed from 1st to 2nd gear. I still have limited drive, but the rear transmission is making very nasty clunking noises. I only drove it a further 400 yards at which point I pulled over and called the AA. The clunking noises also happen when the car is pushed along out of gear (as I found out when I unloaded the car from the AA transporter).

Anyone got any ideas about what the problem might be? I am reluctant to return the car immediately to the OPC, bearing in mind I have no obvious way of getting there and it could be a huge bill.

Help

Since they will have had the transmission out to do the clutch, you have to question whether they put it back together properly. It's too much of a coincidence for the transmission to fail so soon after the work. Sounds unbelievably nasty but the car has to go back to Swindon for them to look at it. Pity the AA couldn't take it there. Is all Ok with the car in neutral - engine revs normally? Let's hope its something wrong with the clutch installation and not the transmission. At the very least, Swindon should accept there's an issue and come and pick up the car. Perhaps they could get one of their smarmy salesmen to help.

Not sure I like the sound of all of this; bad news travels of course but the once bullet proof drive train of the 911 now seems to be anything but. Beam me up, Scottie!

Sounds more like poor workmanship by the dealership as bluesl says very coincidental as that's where they were fiddling. The transmission properly would be bullet proof but if there is human error anything happen. Lets us all know the outcome.

Thanks for the replies. Incidentally, anyone know why I come up as a non-member on the forum? I've been a PCGB member since 2001 and put in my member number when I registered for the forum!!

Answering your question, blueSL, the car is not fine in neutral (engine revs ok but I still get the same clunks even rolling the car with the engine switched off). I will contact Dick Lovett in the morning. To date the service depts at Swindon and Bristol have been excellent - now comes the acid test. I also hope they will be kind enough to come and collect the car.

Watch this space.

Adrian,

sad story, please keep us informed of progress.

I have set you as a Member, this sometimes lags behind.

Unusual!

My experience of Lovetts/Porsche Swindon (over many years) has also been excellent. Hope it is an easy fix.

I said I would keep you all posted regards progress. Lovett's retrieved the car on Monday morning without question. They phoned late on Monday afternoon with many apologies. It appears that they forgot to torque up the driveshaft to gearbox flange bolts on one side. Car has just returned home in A1 nick with new flanges and bolts on both sides (and a bottle of champagne by way of further apologies). They have also fixed a number of other niggles that were on the "fix-it" list for another day. All done FOC of course.

We all make mistakes and in my books Lovetts (Porsche Swindon) have acted very professionally over this (they didn't have to own up). Duncan Ince (Service) has been particularly good and kept me fully up to date with events. A happy ending.

Cheers for now,

Adrian

You could say that!! Thanks to all those on the forum who helped out. Good to know there are other like minded 996 owners out there. I'll be a regular visitor to the forum from now on.

PS: anyone want to buy a 2000 (W) Boxster S in Guards Red (FPMDSH) with 55k on the clock. 2 previous owners both PCGB members. UK car with private plate (N 80XST). Options include Black Sport Design interior, 18" Sport Design alloys, new brakes, clutch, RMS!!! Lots of photos available. Bristol region.

Cheers for now,

Adrian
