996 C4 v 993 TT

Would I be mad to swap my 2002 C4 with 11000 miles for a 1998 993 TT in speed Yellow?

Which will hold its value better?

Depends on a number of things - doesn't it always!
(1) The exact spec of the 993, particularly factory performance upgrades to either 430 or 450 bhp.
(2) The overall condition of the 993, and it's colour - those yellow cars are becoming notoriously difficult to shift (including a very rare 993 Turbo S which wandered unsold around various dealerships for a year!).
(3) Taking the above into account, is the money right.
If you are happy with all of the above, then go with the 993; the last of the air cooled 911 turbos, and as such, desireable for years to come!

Wise words from John, I would also throw the 996TT into the pot, there are now some 2000 cars, which start in the £50k's. Your car must be worth 45-48k-ish trade, so it's not much more for the newer model ! Having said that if you can live with the 993's interior the Turbo is one mean beastie & should (in the right condition...& colour!!!) hold it's value better than a 996.
Interesting choices, keep us posted.

I think Grant has a point. If you are used to driving a 996, switching to a 993 might be a bit of a culture shock from the creature comforts & interior style point of view. If however, you like the 993 interior, I feel that it will depeciate less and give you a purer driving experience. The only question is that the 993 that you are looking at is speed yellow. People either love it or hate it so a limited audience from a resale perspective. Therefore, make sure you factor this into the price you offer for it and then you can't go wrong.

Thanks guys.

When I mentioned that it was Speed Yellow to a petrolhead friend his reaction was "No,no,no!"

It is difficult.

Yes, the 993 is better looking
Yes, I actually feel that the interior is more special.
But - my 996 is as usable as a Golf as an everyday proposition - and perhaps hard to go back in time.
Can you really get a 996TT in the £50ks? Where and how?

Lovetts (Porsche Centre Swindon) have had a 996TT on their forecourt for a while. I'm sure they would do a very good deal - if you don't mind Forest Green/Savanna.

Otherwise, you would be looking at a c.2000X or Y 996, with c.24,000+ mls, for sale privately. Such cars may be advertised for more, but hard bargaining will find you a car for c.£55k.
