996 C4

Now bear with me, because this is going to sound very silly, but I have just brought a 1999 996 C4, more or less on a whim (though I have owned 91's and 944's previously) but don't know, and can't seem to discover on the internet, what the C4 designation represents, as opposed to C2, and some I've seen with just Carrera. Any ideas?[&:]

Hi Rod. I think that I might be being had here but anyway - here goes......

You've bought a Porsche 911 3.4 litre, naturally aspirated, flat six coupe with four wheel drive - hence C4 (Carrera 4) as opposed to a C2 (Carrera 2) which would just have the rear wheels driving the car. The C2 has exactly the same engine and power output but it only delivers it to the rear wheels. And without wanting to confuse the issue any further the cars that just have the word "Carrera" on the back are also C2 cars.

It can get confusing: I own a 996, 3.6 litre Carrera - or a 911 C2 - which is of course just a straight forward 3.6 911 coupe - or just a 911. Simples!

Thanks Adrian, that's what I thought, but as the vendor (Prestige Marques of Surrey) made no mention of 4wd, nor did the ad, I did wonder. However, it's no problem, and I know was a £5,000 option when new, just as long as the weight penalty and fuel consumption aren't too affected.

A neighbour of mine once bought an Audi Quattro 20v
It took him weeks to realise it wasnt 20 volt as he couldn't find the second battery! [:D]

My brother (who is an engineer) once asked me if my 911 was front or rear wheel drive.

My wife asked me if the 911 ran on diesel or petrol.

I once asked my brother what a speech inpepiment was.

All of the above are true.[:D]

Well I'm glad I brought a little of humour into the forum, even if it does make me out to be a complete dope! Thanks for the feedback.
