996 C4S Front Bumper Removal for Horn Replacement

Hi All,
I just replaced the low tone horn on my 996 as it came up in the recent MOT as 'noted' - PSC quoted £250 for the job so I decided to DIY and got a replacement pair of horns from Porscheshop for about £30 a piece (yes I replaced both).

Getting the front bumper off was quite straightforward after watching a few YouTube videos on how to do it. I also cleaned up the rads which weren't too bad.
I now have a couple of questions after completing the job.

1). I noticed that the Ambient Air Temp sensor was hanging loose into the air intake duct with no obvious way of securing it. It passes through a rubber grommet but then just dangles in the air flow - that can't be right, can it?

2). While I was replacing the front boot catch cover - the plastic cover right at the front that secures with 4 plastic retainers - one of the plastic latches flipped off into fresh air and I couldn't find it! May have dropped into the front bumper area and I wasn't about to remove the whole thing again. So, my question here is where can I source some replacement latches - usual eBay, Porscheshop resources have drawn a blank so far.

Any help on these two questions are much appreciated !

1) It should clip in to a bracket moulded into the front grille. (Pic in next post)

2) I think you need item 16 on the attached. £1.28+VAT each from a Porsche Centre.

Hi Phil
Just make sure the missing part did not fall into the catch mechanism, as it did on another members car jamming the lock closed.

Hi Andy - thanks for such a thorough and rapid response.

The mystery is solved as I had the original vent intakes replaced by wire mesh ones from Zunsport. These were fitted at my usual PSC a couple of years ago and they must have not thought of a way of attaching the air temp sensor.
I've just checked the original vents that I kept and can clearly see the mounting hole as per your picture ... so, I'll have to think of a way of fixing that.

Based on your warning of the plastic retainer possibly having fallen into the lock mechanism I had a really good look in the whole boot space area and found the rogue fixing so that is now sorted.

Once again, many thanks for your very helpful reply, diagram and photos.

Best Wishes,

Phil

Thanks T911UK - that's a link worth having !

I see the horns are £18 on that site so thanks for the advice - too late this time ;-)

Best wishes, Phil
