996 C4S ride quality / ride height / suspension

Hi all,

I have a 996 C4S 2004 cab. I've had it for 4 years now but recently thought more and more that the ride is so hard and harsh. It has never been a soft ride as you would expect, but at the moment it feels so hard that it feels like my 40mm lowered Renault Clio from the 90s.

I know the car was tracked at least a bit as I found some gravel in the side pods. Other than that, I know very little about the car before my time. I got it at 79k (now on 96k). The suspension is not obviously aftermarket or lowered and the wheels look nice and cantered in the arches.

I have no knocks or other abnormal noises from the suspension. Since I've had it, I have replaced the following just due to normal wear and tear (mostly all less than 10k miles ago)...
  • all drop links
  • front lower control arms
  • all anti-roll bar mount bushings
  • outer tie rods
  • rear lower control arms

So I know hard to determine from a forum post and some photos, but does anyone have any thoughts or knowledge to share that could help me?
  1. Whats the stock ride height so I could check that?
  2. What can I look for to know if they are stock springs or after market?
  3. Anything else I can check or that might cause a really harsh ride?

Thanks in advance

PS excuse how dirty it is at the moment... no water pressure at my new house to wash it with!

Does it have M030 suspension.? Some cars i have looked at with this have been awful, Harsh is not the word. Are your new bushes rubber or PU.?

Hi Radial
It might be worth a trip to Centre Gravity https://centre gravity.co.uk/ for a set up check, I had mine done about three years ago. They transformed the ride and handling it felt like a new car even on the dreadful roads in Oxfordshire.

HI Andy
As Andy stated Centre Gravity are one of the best for checking and improving everything with regards to suspension on 996s and well worth the trip,
At 96k your shocks will have deteriorated somewhat so that may be an issue.
Tyre pressures and tyre age has a bearing on things.
Are there any colour code markings on the springs?
Lowered suspension -30mm on C4s was Option X73, but was not officially installed on the Cab only the Coupe.
ROW (not USA) Colour codes for stock springs on C4s Cabs from the info I have are
Front = Pink / Blue
Rear = Blue / Violet.
Good luck
Andy

All excellent advice given and I agree 100%.

Try accelerating hard, does the front of the car feel like it points up and wonders all over the place with you hanging on, or does it feel totally under control? That will be a sure sign of a sagging rear suspension (which as has been said will be par for the course at this kind of mileage)

The shocks can be rebuilt and don't need to be replaced. Center Gravity will have a set in stock on a swap
basis so no need to wait.

Thanks all. I'll Speak to Centre Gravity and will check my spring colours when I can get up and in there next time to have a look.
