996 Dash Instrument Lights

Hi. Recently a couple of instrument light bulbs have blown in my dash on my 996. Has anyone managed to successfully replace these themselves and can give me some advice / pointers to get to them without causing any damage? My local Porsche garage say they can do it, but it will end up costing 3 figures to replace a couple of bulbs! Any tips / help will be gratefully received. Thanks all,

Hi Grifter,

ok, this is dead easy...10 minute job.

Dismantle the dash in accordance with the following:

Loads of us on this forum have done this, so if you get stuck, just shout (you'll probably find you can't remove the hazard switch - just keep pulling!).

Once you have the dash apart, there are 3 tiny bulbs in the rear of the clusters. My OPC told me they were all different values, but I'm not sure they were right, or perhaps that only relates to certain (later) models - mine's 05/00. Simply check yours when you remove them, prior to ordering replacements.

I got my bulbs from Porschapart (http://www.porsch-apart.co.uk/parts.cfm) who have them in stock at a fraction of the OPC price.

Good luck. Neil.

There are three wattage values for the bulbs - 1.2W, 1.5W and 3W. The OPC price s are £3.54/£3.54/£4.74 +VAT. Later clusters (02-) have LED illumination, and I don't think you can change them. Scouser did a 'blue backlight' conversion on his (detailed on Renntech somewhere) if you fancy a change.

I agree with Neil - a 10 minute job, but that's the SECOND time you do it!

Neil / Richard. Thanks a lot for the info, really appreciate it. I shall give myself plenty of time before I attempt the job! Blue lights sounds interesting too! Cheers all.
