Haven't used the car for a week so the alarm system has gone into sleep mode. Went to open the door with the key and nothing happened - the key turned ok but didn't wake the alarm up so the remote won't work. Any ideas how to get the door open? Is there a way to awaken the alarm system? If not, what is the cheapest option - drill out the door lock or smash the door glass?

It sounds like the blade on the door lock barrel isn't properly engaged in the door lock mechanism. This is a common mistake when someone has replaced the door lock, and not checked that the blade is engaged.

I think your only option is the emergency release cable for the front lid. If you disconnect the battery, charge it and reconnect, it should wake up the alarm system and the remote should work again.

If you drop me an email, I'll send you a scan of the pages in my book which show where the cable is located. (Another excuse for a shameless plug).

Thanks a lot - that worked. Except it took me 2 hours to find the release cable, it was on the nearside of my old Carrera so that's where I searched first. Then discovered the facelifts have changed sides - duh!
