996 engine residue...advice?

Seasons greetings....

Yep im new to the forum, and sadly my first post is a question... im sure most have you have read the 996 buyers guide... well allow me to explain.

My car is a 1999 C2 with just 28K and fpsh... runs like a dream, temp is just above the 80 (needle points straight up to the middle of the gauge), and oil pressure right up as norm. No oil leaks on the garage floor, and coolant appears to be at the right level...

Occassionally there is a burning smell, hmmm.... a clutchy smell from underneath the N/S rear wheel arch, open the rear engine bay lid and there is no smell, just from that rear arch... is it a clutch or oil seep?

Finally, the 3.4 has been labelled as having various problems with the cylinder liners cracking - cross contamination... white smoke, and lots of condensation... well i dont have any of that (thank god) or the residue on the coolant header/filler tank, BUT... I often find a residue (yellowish - no its not mustard) on the top of the oil filler pipe (as you remove the yellow oil cap you find it on the metal part of the pipe, but not as far as the plastic part further down)

Any suggestions what this may be and the smell?

Thanks

Steve

Don't worry about the light coating of mayo in the filler tube - it's a common occurrence, especially in the cold weather. There are loads of threads on here about it.

I think all 996's are a bit stinky at the rear end, especially after a good pasting. Mine's more of a rubbery smell, but again you'll find lots of similar threads on the forum.

Stop worrying and enjoy!

Happy New Year to one and all.

I had a handbrake retaining spring break (probabley due to leaving the handbrake on when car wet..lots of threads on this). Brake shoes then moved around in the drum whilst moving, this could be the cluch burning smell. If you jack that wheel up you should hear it scraping, if indeed that is the cause.
I agree they all do smell a bit especially when hot and wet as the muck off the wheels plasters the exhausts.

Steve,

I agree with Richard as my 33k C4 Cab has occasional residual mayo (and so had several others that I inspected prior to making a purchase, so I stopped worrying and accepted it must be the norm) and smells of burning rubber at the rear after a run out.

Regards, Neil.
