996 exhaust bypass mod

Hi all

Firstly, apologies if this has already been covered, I'm still finding my way around the forum......

I have been thinking of getting a PSE fitted to my Targa, but have been a bit gob-smacked a the price (£3,000 plus fitting...). I was reading an old thread on Pistonheads which suggested getting Hayward and Scott to carry out the bypass mod, which apparently makes it sound identical to the PSE, albeit permanently 'on'. A bit cheaper, too, at about £350....

Has anyone had this carried out?

Otherwise, are there any other recommendations? I'm after a fruity sound at idle and low revs, and a blare at full revs, but quiet motorway cruising......

Thanks in advance!

Jason

Hey Jason,

Firstly, I have a PSE fitted and I love it. The ability to switch the growl on or off helps. However, it came with the car. There is no way I would pay for it to be fitted on top, but thats just my opinion.

My friend has a boxster and fitted a Hayward by pass pipe he bought of them. Although you can notice the difference in sound its only really at lower revs due to the width of the pipe he went for which I think was 1 inch.

This was recently covered in the folloiwng thread.

Having heard Roy's car and knowing that it was slightly cheaper, I would consider that first!!

Good luck and let us know how you get on.

Hi Jason and t1x,
I've been thinking of getting this by-pass mod done for a while now, its about time I did something about it. Ive got a C4 Cabriolet and what I would really like is to hear a car with the mod done. So if theres anyone near Derby/Lichfield who has the mod done and would let me listen to a start up and maybe a low rev. run I would be grateful. I just dont want to sound like a "MaxPower" reader!
Regards
Wills

Thanks T1x

I think I'm going to bite the bullet and get it done. Apparently 1.25 inch diameter pipes are just about right, no booming on the motorway. And it is of course reversible if it ends up sounding like a chav's Saxo....

Guys, if anyone lives in the Hampshire area with this bypass please let me know - I'd love to hear it!

Jason,

I live in NW London, otherwise would have happily met you.

Good luck with it. You wont be disappointed. In fact you probably will have wished you went for a wider pipe!!

I have a 1.5 bypass west London sounds lovely

is there any specific area that its need to be welded to or is it just a case of infront of the silencer?

Have a look at the pictures here

So does the pipe link between the inlet and outlet on the silencer or is it as shown in the thread from a pipe direct to the silencer for a 1999 car?

Hi there

Thanks for your offers to listen to your exhaust - I'll be sure to give you a shout if I'm up that way, although I think I'm probably going to get it done anyway.

In the meantime I'm interested to know more about your Kenwood satnav. I currently have the original PCM2 in my 03 Targa, and the satnav is woeful. I don't have a CD changer.

Would the system you have be compatible, do you think? And am I right in thinking you play your iPod/iPhone through it via Bluetooth?

Thanks

Jason

sorry about delay inundated with emails i run my iPod phone through the kenwood bluetooth and also directly there is an iPod cable which charges your iPod phone as well. seriously recommended great satnac and also other functions including reversing camera.Pioneer are also good. once again happy for you to look at a major investment. I one mine as i have TV tuner so i drive to BBC news visually and aurally

Chris

Jason,

I think you will find that you car has fibre optic cabling for the sound so you may need to put in new amp etc. double check

Yes, it has MOST (yup, I've been reading Richard Hamilton's book, folks..)but the guy who is going to fit the unit has no concerns regarding this, and has fitted several Kenwood units such as this to 2003 onwards 996s, apparently. We'll see.....!

My main concern is that if I came to sell the car it may be less desirable because of the aftermarket (albeit considerably inferior) unit........

Thoughts?
