996 Exhaust manifold bolts.

Hi everybody I am new here to the forum and just wondering if anybody here has managed to remove there rusty exhaust manifold bolts and if there's anything you have to do to gain better access or if there's any specialist tooling to make the job a bit easier or is it best left to the experts?

From what i understand one option is to get them glowing hot with a blowtorch & bang a 10mm socket onto them to remove them, beware as snapping the studs is quite easy.

I bought some stainless steel exhaust manifolds for my old Boxster S
My local OPC undertook the job and only managed to remove two bolts
The rest snapped and had to be drilled out and re-tapped, at some expense
????
Safe to say I haven't bothered with this mod on my 996 Targa ????
 
11 out of 12 of my manifold bolts were seized - got them drilled out and retapped for around £300 notes (inc VAT) - fraid its almost inevitable.

Any reputable performance exhaust specialist should be able to sort this for you - I can recommend Toulmin Motors if you are in striking distance of Windsor, Berks.

Pm me with phone number I did mine and 1/2 of mine were siezed but you don't have to use flame on them.
 
I replaced the manifolds on my old c2. I started the job myself and managed to remove just one side but only one bolt came off, the rest all snapped. I had it towed to an engineer who snapped the remaining heads off the and used a specially made jig as a guide to drill the rest out cleanly. He then cleaned out the existing threads and fitted new parts. From memory I paid £260. From what I know there are companies out there that sell the jig and drill bits as a kit. With skill and patience it can be done DIY! Wouldn't surprise me if fellow members own the kit and have attempted this job themselves. We'll know soon enough! Good luck. John.
 
It was bad enough for me removing the exhaust system at the interface with the turbos to enable replacement of the water pump. In this case the studs tended to come out with the nut, if the nut had any flats left on it to turn it! Managed in the end though. looking at the state of my manifold retainers (can't call them nuts!) I would have to resort to drilling the lot out.

Take a look at this months 911 Porsche World they have a review of the jig and it gets superb write up. Have seen one for sale on here recently and if memory serves me right someone on 911 UK Forum has one he rents out. Check though as jigs are different between the standard and turbo engines
