996 facelifts?

Has anyone heard whether you can facelift pre 2001 996's. Will this devalue the car or add value? I have seen one for sale on 911uk and need some advice as to what questions to ask and whether to touch it or not?

Any comments appreciated

Hi

I would imagine that it would lower the value of the car, in that it is non-original, and there will always be a question mark over why it was done - were the original panels accident damaged etc

It would also depend on the quality of workmanship for the conversion, but most modifications struggle to recover their cost at sale time

My 2p - I could always be wrong [:)]

If it's just the conversion from pre to post 2001 model this is a relatively simple upgrade isn't it, consisting primarily of the lights and front bumper? I much prefer the look of the face lifted 996 so can understand why someone would want to do this, although still think it's not a patch on the 993.
I saw an advert recently for an upgrade from 996 to 997 look which entailed new wings, etc and I certainly wouldn't touch that with the proverbial barge pole for the reasons Pete gave.

Gents,

Thanks for your replies. The guy selling the car advises that it was done purely for cosmetics and using original porsche parts (included wings lights and bumper but not bonnet) wont tell me where it was done until I show some interest in viewing or buying. Says I am welcome to any inspection for piece of mind and to prove no accident damage? What do you think? 1999 model with aero kit 35k miles with FPSH wants £31k?

For not a lot more, well a bit closer to £35k, you could probably find a genuine '02 3.6 'facelift'.

And, the 'facelift' has considerably more improvements and upgrades than just the new lights and bumpers.

Totally agree, a friend sold his 02 facelift back in march, 35k miles, nice clean straight example for 34k.

Sounds a little weird/suspicious - if the seller is genuine, what is there to hide? I saw a pre-facelift 996 at the May Spa trip which had been facelifted to be a full Mk2 GT3 lookalike. The car had even been converted from LHD to RHD using original parts... but WHY? The chap who did the work was there and he did a fairly hard sell of his ability to source parts etc. Apparently that particular car had been crashed before and it became a project to convert and facelift. But the question remains why anyone would go to the expense of converting a relatively common car at great expense when a simple sell and re-buy would probably be just as economical.
