996 First Time Buyer

Hi.

My first post on the site and I am now in a position to get my first 911 996.

I have a couple of questions I hope you can answer:

1. Is there any specific options apart from PSM I should be looking for?
2. Is the performance/handling at the limit much different between a C2 and C4 (obviously during tests i can't do this)?
3. Do they run ok on RON 95 or is any petrol type best? 99, optimax?
4. If i want to put a bicycle in the back, can you get a specific cover for the seats?
5. Is there any performance mod/induction kit which works on 3.4 particularly well?
6. Are goodyear F1 eagles okay on car or do any specific tyres work well? Michellin cups?

1. PSE, or some form of sports exhaust. If you buy one without, budget for one, as you will want one.
2. Yes, quite different. The C4 understeers more on the limit. You will probably notice a difference in normal driving - the C2 will feel a little lighter and more responsive to steering input.
3. It will run on 95 RON, but 98 or better is recommended.
4. I don't know of a rear seat cover - maybe someone else can help.
5. IMO you are best sticking to an induction system using a dry filter. Oiled filters are notorious for frying the Mass Air Flow Sensor. Whatever the claims, I doubt you will get an increase in power, but you will get a more satisfying sound.
6. F1 Eagles aren't Porsche 'N' rated, so check/notify your insurance company first. I used to be an N rated advocate, but next time I'm going to try something different.

I'll leave the other questions to the experts but....

4. I use a road bike (drop handle bar..) and took it to the south of France in the back of my 996 (C2 3.6) in a bike bag. The rear seats fold down and I was able to put the whole thing in the bike bag (£30 from one of the many internet sites) by tilting the front seats forward and then using the parcel shelf to support the far end of the package and then placing my other luggage on top of the back of the rear seats - thus building up the height so that the front of the package was supported. This only took a few minutes to do. I'm not sure whether you intend to regularly carry the bike in the back - but if you do this might prove to be a bit of a long work-around! It is doable though!

So, to be brief; yes, you can carry your bike in the back - but I would consider my method as it stops the seats getting marked and the bike bag tends to contain all the bits of bike!

For clarification, the tyres I have always prefered are Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3's on other cars due to their wet weather performance mainly. I would be curious to know if anyone has had any experience of them on a C2 996 coupe?

Thanks Adrian for bike advice - I race my bike, so likely to have it in the car every other weekend in summer, but I always thought my bike bags would be too bulky to fit (i could be wrong). Carbon bike wheels have separate bags anyway so it is just a matter of getting frame/bars in.

Eagle F1s GSD3s or the new F1 Assymetrics are fantastic in the wet and I have them on the other cars but have stuck to the N tyres on the 996. I like the Contis for wet weather performance.
 
On the question of tyres, the C2 996 car I am looking at is running 18inch factory turbo alloys. Is there any maximum width that can be fitted.

265/35/18 seems standard - please let me know if this is correct?

285/30/18 - is this a feasable size for 18 turbo alloys? or is any other size appropriate?

225/40/18 at front.
