996 flywheel replacement

Dear all,

I was just looking for some common sense advice.

My well maintained 996 C4S has done 85K miles and is currently in with the OPC with an oil leak issue.

It drives beautifully, but whilst the gearbox was out I thought I'd have the clutch replaced - OPC says it looks worn; but the flywheel looks fine and they have recommended not to change it.

But - would you replace the flywheel along with the clutch? (I am definitely changing the clutch)

I am in 2 minds. The enthusiast in me says no brainer - it is simply the parts cost as the area is exposed.

On the other hand, it is very expensive and if it doesn't need doing then that money could go on so many other things!

I would change it personally, especially with the dual mass flywheels, how much is flywheel against how much it would be to remove box and clutch again if it does go? At least you have peace of mind. Just a question whats Porsche recommendation on how many miles to change flywheel?
 
OPC don't usually miss a chance to make a buck - if they say its Ok, its probably OK for at least another 25-30K, will you still own the car then? A really "pays your money takes your choice..." issue I'd say.
 
As I recall the Flywheel is lifed at around 100k miles, so at 85k I'd personally get it swapped out.

But more importantly what are you doing about the IMS? If the box is off I'd get the IMS changed as a precaution.

I'd imagine an OPC will only replace rather than upgrade the IMS so there is the added question regarding whether a new original type IMS is any better than an old but still functioning IMS?

Do both, IMS and flywheel.
