HI ALL. DOES ANYONE KNOW THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE STANDARD 996 GT2 EXHAUST AND THE STANDARD 996 TURBO EXHAUST.ONLY ASKING AS I NEED A NEW EXHAUST FOR MY TURBO AND HAVE BEEN OFFERED A GOOD GT2 EXHAUST WHICH LOOKS IDENTICAL BUT HAS A DIFFERENT PART NUMBER ALSO WOULD IT BE OK TO USE ON STANDARD TURBO THANKS ADAM

there has been some debate on this subject in the past on pistonheads, if i remember correctly (and I am sure Richard will correct me) the GT2 and the X50 and turbo S all have the same exhaust.I was told by Gert at carneval when he was doing some monkey business to my exhuast all the above have 300 cell cats where as the standard turbo has 400 cell cats, and that as far as I am aware is it,mine had a rather pleasant slightly more roarty voice than the standard. The new price is approx £2500!!!, second hand I paid for my X50 exhaust I think £200.

The non X50 car also has k16 turbos as apposed to k24s on the X50 and GT2 so that might be a reason for different exhausts if the hot side of the turbo is different. Not sure what the difference in the turbo is? Bigger hotside or compressor?

What???? maybe I didnt make it very clear, the differance is the cats, less cells =less back pressure= more ponies,it is small change and by no means accounts for all the power differnace with the GT2 which has a differant ecu map and intercolours turbos etc

here is the discussion in all its glorious technicolour

read the whole thread the bit about the exhuast is towards the bottom of page one

I think you are correct, Richard. I can't find a confirmation about the 300/400 cell cats, but found this in some literature: In order to reduce exhaust back pressure, the exhaust system at the rear silencer of the 911 GT2 has been modified compared to that of the 911 Turbo (996). Presumably the freer flowing cats are responsible.

The turbocharger flanges where the cats bolt on are the same for Turbo and X50/GT2, but the K24 has bigger diameter compressor, turbine, and wastegate.

Edit: Need to be a bit quicker.

I have given up reading PH threads on chipping and turbos. Someone starts a thread about wanting a mild power upgrade, and it always end up in a willy-waving competition.

Thanks to everyone who answered my query on the turbo and GT2 exhaust difference.im sure it must be something to do with the cats have put it along side of my standard turbo exhaust and its identical in every way bore size, bolt holes ,ect just part number different.i managed to get a very good condition gt2 exhaust for £130 from someone who upgraded so couldnt turn it down.will have to fit it and see if car runs ok or if its louder ect. thanks again adam
