996 GT2

actually got airborn in one 3yrs back at 140mph down a country lane that a mate had whohad it up'd to 550bhp. I know they had some bad press yrs ago as being the 'widow maker' but currnet values make them an interesting prospect

They did get a bad reputation at first, but I think people have a different view these days, and they are becoming much more desired. The prices fell sharply at first, but have rallied quite a bit, and seem to have strengthened in the last 12 months. A good alignment setup can make a big difference to the handling. An interesting quote from a chap on Pistonheads (SpeedYellow) which seems to sum up the handling quite well, when comparing it to a GT3.
Nope all myths, with the geo set (Porsche didn't do a great job here, from the factory they dialed in lots of safe understeer, however when you pushed though it, the oversteer was a little snappy and difficult to catch). Setup properly, they are a match for GT3 in handling terms (owned all of them and tracked etc. and spent a couple of weeks in the Alps with a group of cars so not just an opinion!) but more technical to drive as there is still some lag to think about if you let the revs drop or SO much grunt if you are up in the rev range.

Strikes me with a Chris Franklin set up they would be awesome. Question is, do you buy one of these or a 993 turbo??

Ryan dunn got airbourne RIP. http://nextgenvoices.org/ryan-dunn-porsche-scorched-heap-of-scrap.asp Be careful out there!. And before anyone say's yes I know its not a GT2 its a GT3. Regards Richard.

Im guessing airbourne as he hit something rather than just flipping at high speed ? Question is without hitting anything are GT2's just uber dangerous machines?

Only if you don't treat it with respect. Especially in the wet. What about fitting a TC system, such as Racelogic? 993T or GT2 - tough choice, but vastly different machines. Wish I had that decision to make...

Personally I would have to go for the GT2 as you don't see that many about. And everyone knows its like a Lion at the circus, It may be doing as its told at the crack off a whip but if you upset me ill eat you and your whip. A beautifull beast.

There also isn't that many for sale on PH. That said the GT3 seems generally to be the preferred variant and the one that sells quickly. The noise of those turbos coming on though cud make up for the lack of aircooled noise if your tempted by a 993 turbo I suppose.
