996 handling problems

Hello all.
Having just recenlty purchased a 98, 996 from a OPC.
I am experiencing severe twitching at speeds over 70mph.On a camber its fine, this only happens in a straight line. The car has new tyres, alignment has been carried out twice now, but its still the same. Can anyone advise me on the remedy. Its all down the garage to sort out, but when buying a car of this nature, one would not expect to have to return 5 times in 1 week!!!

Also the second gear is what i can describe as raw? it crunches when changing up or down. Now they are telling that the syncromesh needs looking at, and involves and gearbox rebuild, which they say is unheard of on a 996, with FOPC SH and 40k on the clock.
I am seriously considering handing the car back, as i have only been on the road for 1 week. All my faith and happiness is gone. Just wish i had kept my boxster!!

I hate to ask, but you don't think the handling could be due to previous accident damage do you?

And gearboxes break. Mechanical things break. You have no idea if the previous owner could even change gear! I doubt that a gearbox rebuild is unheard of on a 996...

Don't let the OPC (which one?) fob you off with an excuse.

Have you seen the other thread on 996 handling problems furter down the page in the 996 forum?

Thanks for the reply Mark.
I have spoke to the previous owner, who has had porsches for a while now. He traded this in for an 18 mth old turbo. He informed me that he never had any bother from it???
Seemed a genuine guy on the phone,a nd even invited me up to take a drive of his pride and joy.
The garage has guaranteed me that there has been no previous accident damage. I have the report, which only states that it has not been a insurance write off.
I have read the other thread about the handling, and i have had my alignment checked twice now. All be it the garage has told me that they only done 2 wheel alignment.
I was at the garage (JCT 600, NCL) this morning where they got their most experienced technician to go out in it. He agreed that the 2nd and 4th gear is crunching and has suggested that they try and replace the linkage cables? This i have accepted, as i do not want to be negative. But if this does not work then i shall be seeking to return the car, and get some sort of compensation?
The handling is still bothering me, and hopefully when they 4 wheel align it on Tuesday, it will be the dream i have been seeking.
Once again thanks for the input

Bry,
just what do you mean by twitching, is it the tyres following the camber of the road ? The 18 inch wheels are rather prone to this. Also how new are the tyres, I have had a weird "floating" sensation on previous 911's when they were first fitted with new tyres, I have been assured this is the new tyres "settling in" & after a few hundred miles the handling has been fine again. Are they all the same tyres & Porker N rated ? With regards to the gearbox, they all tend to be VERY notchy when cold, but should be fine when warmed up, if it is still very notchy when warm you have problems ! one other question, does the 911 have sports or standard suspension, the standard suspension is more "floaty" than a Boxter around the twisty stuff !!

Hi grant, thanks for the info.
My tyres are all the same, with 7mm tread all round. And has sports suspension fitted.
The garage has just phoned to inform me that on the 4 wheel alignment, one of the rear arms, was out of camber and tolerance. They are re-newing this arm as i write, then back on the alignment. Hopefully i should get it back this afternoon.
Gear Box- well new cables have been fitted, and she has been road tested. All they said on the phone was that i will see the diference???
I am concerned, like you say, she was still crunching when warm, especially if a quick change is required. Driving a like Sunday driver is no problem.
Anyhow i keep this post up-dated
Thanks again
Bryan
