Hi has anyone had to replace the headgasket on their 996 ?

If so is it a big job and how hard is it to do ???

Mine is using water (not to much though) and there is a slight milkeyness in the oil filler tube, cannot see any leaking coolant on the garage floor.....

Cheers

Head gasket wouldn't be my first guess with those symptoms. Have you determined via a chemical test of the water that the head gasket has gone?

Pressure test may or may not throw up a problem. Checking coolant for dissolved CO is a sure test though.

Slight coolant loss is much more likely to be a radiator begining to rot out. Mayo in the oil tube is "normal" for a 996 and nothing to worry about.

I'd put money on it just being the old mayo in the oil filler pipe scenario. I nearly passed out when I first saw mine - but later found out that it's just normal - especially during colder weather. As the engine gets hotter the hot air passes up into the oil filler pipe and mixes with tiny amounts of condensed water - thus forming the Dijon-like deposit. I reckon that you've just paid more attention to your water level than you normally would have and noticed that she's used a bit.

I must admit, I've been amazed by some of the horror stories that you get on these pages regarding engine (and other) problems with 996's but I don't think that I ever heard of someone with a cylinder head gasket gone (Yet[8|])

Hi, 99% sure its not your head gasket.
Use a combustion leak tester, to determine if you have exhaust gases in your cooling system.
If the test is positive then you will probably have a cracked cylinder liner.
Ps: pull the oil dip stick out and make sure there is no sign of coolant on it.
