996 in Australia

Currently in WA looking at cost of shipping my 996 C4S there and looking at the alternative of purchasing over there. The only car I can find nationally is a 996 carrera 2 2002 at $69000 which is 45.5K UKP!!!!!
Likely cost of shipping over is in the region of 10-16K UKP dependant on import tax and GST levels so looks a viable alternative.

Has anyone got any information on shipping a Porsche to OZ and the levels of tax payable as the actual shipping and customs looks like 4-5K UKP.

Hi Brad

Haven't been on these pages for weeks thanks to being incredibly busy but felt the need to reply as I have a little experience of Australia.

I lived in Melbourne from 1991 to 1993, so my info is dated and may no longer be valid but this is what I learned while living there.

There is a 95% import duty on cars to protect the national industry (Ford, Holden (GM) and Toyota, primarily). This means that your Porsche will cost you considerably more there than it would here. This makes them even more exclusive than in Europe. Now you might see why used car prices are mad. Also remember that, until recently, the A$ was considerably weaker against the Pound and the Euro. When I was there it was 2.2dollars to the pound.

When I was there I had an Audi back home on the Isle of Man and looked at importing it into Australia. I was told that it could be brought in at little or no import duty if you can demonstrate that you have owned it for 2 years or more so you might find that you can take your own car for far less than you would have to pay for one out there. You might also be wise to take a container load of spares with you as you would probably have to wait a while for the less common parts to arrive.

£4-5k sounds steep for shipping costs although Australia always had a reputation for militant working practices in the ports with the consequence of very high shipping costs.

That's my understanding of things out there. Might have changed in the near 20 years since I looked into it.

Regards

You only need to have owned the car for a year if its post Jan 1 1989 (which yours obviously is). Private import rules only allow one car every 5 years now per person.

When i was adding costs up for my 964 I came up with a figure of around £5k to ship the car and get it on the road in Sydney. Shipping was about £2k.

All the official info is here. As usual - lots of paperwork required to support your application.

Good Luck

My son shipped his MG Midget from Southampton to Freemantle about 6 years ago on a Ro Ro ship. I believe it cost him about £800 - I know I had to deliver the car to the docks! One thing I remember is that the shipping company were supposed to wash and thoroughly clean the outside of the car before shipping, and provide a certificate to that effect. It was not done, so my son got quite a hefty bill for the import authorities washing the car in Freemantle before it could be imported.
