996 In Car Entertainment

I have a 1998 996 and am looking to upgrade the incur entertainment system
It currently has the original Porsche sat nav, and radio / CD fitted in a 'double DIN' space

I've been quoted £1200+ VAT for fitting a Kenwood DNX4250 DAB system from an independant Porsche specialist
Does anyone know any over systems that fit, and any companies in Warwickshire that could fit them?

Cheers
Rob

Rob!!

PCM1 is double-DIN width, but slightly taller (about 10mm). Pretty much any double-DIN system will fit - all you need is a trim surround which takes up the gap at the top. Connects2 make one, and it is widely available mail order. You will probably want to remove the navigation drive and replace it with a cubby hole, but you can get them from Porsche for about £25. If you have the M490 amplifier you will also need an adapter cable for the power and amplifier connections, but these are easy to get hold of, as Audioleads make them.

Sorry, but I don't know anyone in your area, but it isn't a difficult job for an installer.

This is what I did in my 996 some years ago:

Last year I replaced mine with an Alpine INE-W977BT (not dab) very please with the result, I had done lots of research on the top three brands, Pioneer, Kenwood, and Alpine.
Unfortunately good car audio shops are few and far between now and none near to me, so I phoned and almost universally they said go for an Alpine unit and you won't go far wrong.
Got a good deal for £850inc vat. including the dedicated 996 surround and I fitted it myself fairly straightforward.

Gents, I have just become the custodian of a 2002(52) 996 C2 with non amplified CDR-22 fitted. I will need to save some more pennies for a double din setup such as the 2 fine examples above. Is there anything quick I can do to hook up my iPhone?
Interestingly enough when looking through all the PO's paperwork there has been a MD fitted in the frunk. I checked and sure enough there is a bracket and I see some Phono plugs buried in behind it. I presume there will be a power plug too?
So I'm thinking if I can power a Bluetooth Receiver and connect it to the phono plugs I should in theory be able to stream via Bluetooth my music from my iPhone. What do you think?

Most UK 996s were fitted with the CD Changer/MD wiring preparation and mounting bracket option. If the CDC/MD player wasn't fitted, then the wiring wasn't connected at the head unit end. I've seen people who have used it to play from an iPod using the headphone output, and changing the settings on the CDR22 to use the cable as an Aux input. I've seen it written up on t'Internet, but Mark Bennett covered it in his Boxster book, so it might be worth dropping him an email. If you can use a Bluetooth interface, so much the better.

Edit: Here are a couple of links to RennTech DIYs:

Cheers Richard.

It was definitely fitted at some point as I have a receipt in my pack that requests it to be removed and a single CDR-22 to be fitted.

Easy to remove the head unit to see if it's plugged in the back.

Thanks for the links will have a look at them later as the sun is out and I fancy a blast!
