996 - last 4WD 911?

Did I hear Clarkson right the other night, that there will be no four wheel drive 997?

Come to think of it, I do not remember any mention of a four wheel drive version being developed (except for the Turbo). Does this mean the 996 will be the last normally aspirated Carrera 4?

That's not what my OPC says - they are taking orders for the C4 and expect deliveries to start ealry 2006.

the turbo 997 is 4wd (I assume) so they must be develping the system & would seem silly to spend all that cash & only use it on one model.

Maybe the Porsche marketing department want to make sure that 997 sales are not depressed by people waiting for the C4/C4S.

Heaven forbid that marketing people should resort to such tricks!

The C4S would have sold just as well as a C2S. It's the body shape that attracts people, together with the more aggressive front bumper.
I relatively neutral on whether you really need 4wd. Some of the security is psychological in my opinion.

I think the turbo will probably continue with it. Although better tyre technology allow you to put ever greater amounts of power through the same contact patch.

I would guess the comment was aimed at the current official position, which is that the 997 is only available in 2wd form, so they are only building it in 2wd.

Most of the competition is 2wd, except for the Gallardo which competes with the turbo which is 4wd.

I think that there are too many variants on the current platform, so some rationalisation might be sensible. But I would not trust what Top Gear say.

Hi everyone

just about to take delivery of my 996 911 turbo

I was told by the dealer that the 997 wont be made in TURBO 4wd guise for at least 2-3 years BUT there WILL be a 4s etc etc
