996 LCDisplay Fault within AirCon Controls

Dear All, some advice please. Over the cold weather the LCD display within the AC dashboard control unit has steadily deteriorated to the extent that now there is a large blob over one half of the temperature display and the ventilation speed area is also variable and only partly working. Any suggestions on the way forward? Does this mean a complete new unit or can just the LCD be replaced? I will take a picture tonight and post later.
