996 Oil Consumption

I seem to be using almost as much Oil as I am petrol!! is this normal?

I know the book states up to 1.5L per 1000Km and I have done 2000miles and used 2.5L which I know is less but does this compare to most others?

Mine is a '98 C2 with 61000 miles on the clock, and I haven't added ANY oil between changes, which I have done every 6000 miles. FWIW, I always use 5W-40 fully synthetic rather than 0 weight. My brother has a '99 C4, and his does the same as mine.

IMHO you are using WAY too much.

Seems high.
My C4S used 1 litre every 6000 miles, the TT uses 1 litre every 3000 miles.

However, although your usage is high, it is within what Porsche claim, so you may struggle to get them to look at it.
Unless you have a leak, just burning this much may not be officially viewed as a problem.

Likewise, my 98 C2 uses no oil, although apparently from new they use a little for the first few miles

Update

4 Liters of Oil 2600 miles coved [:(]

It's going into Porsche on monday for a few minor things, think i'm gonna ask them to check this out!

I would have thought that you would be getting a lot of smoke if it was burning a litre in 650 miles. Either that, or big puddles in your garage.

I had a Fiat Uno turbo ie (pause for sharp intake of breath) many years ago (about'87). A spirited trip down the motorway of, say, 200 miles, was sufficient to burn enough synthetic oil that the dipstick reading would go from full to the bottom mark on the dip stick.
Dipstick seems an appropriate description...
I never saw any smoke trails, too busy looking out for cars with blue lights on. But, it was deemed typical of the breed.
Like several other respondents my car at 6 years/52K does not and has never burnt oil during my ownership since '02. Perhaps they take a little longer to run in if we aren't allowed to use all the performance.
Now there's a good excuse to give it some!

I've seen similar consumption to the previous post with a 2003 C4. Saw high oil consumption from new up to 6,000 miles. At 12,500 useage has become much more efficient with a dramatic reduction in oil useage over the last 2000 miles or so. I've used 8 litres of Mobil 1 since new, so in total am averaging 1 liter per 1,500 miles.

I have a similar usage of oil and to be fair its what I expected and of no concern to me. But whilst your out using the Mobil 1, don't forget it's on offer at the moment at Halfords!! £28 odd

Thanks for the reply's, it is in with Porsche Hatfield at the moment and they are going to take a look there has been some small oil patch's underneath the car but no smoke from the back end so will have to wait and see what they have to say.

Just for reference the owners manual does state that up to 1.5L per 1000 km can be normal which equates to 1L every 414 miles!!

I have been using Mobil 1 0w - 40

Ever thought of using a 5W-40 oil? I'm sure older engines (like mine) benefit from it. There are several P-approved oils available in this range. I know independents like Northway tend to use Magnatec 10-40 (not on the P-list of approved oils), and it is probably because they are seeing more older vehicles than OPC's. I found that changing from 0-40 to 5-40 did give a little extra pressure at low revs when hot, which was comforting. Compared to my previous (much older) 993, I get lower oil pressure readings in the 996, which I questioned at first, but have subsequently found to be the norm.

From what's been written on this and other threads, it seems like the 996 engine uses less oil as it grows older! I wonder where the turning point is? Anyone out there with a mega-miler that can comment?

All engine do/should use more oil from new as items bed in..
but the same as yourself, would like to know the turning point 100k perhaps,
but I guess we never will as everyone would sell the motors before that point.[;)]

picked my 04 996C2 last wednesday and have done just over 500 miles in it since then, (fantastic by the way!) Car has now done 2800 miles.
Oil measuring sensor indicated low Oil so i got a litre of 0w40 mobile 1 from halfords, went to put some in but checked dip stick first and it didnt show any oil!
Took the oil filler cap off and found some yellow sludge in the neck?? cleaned it out with a rag and added a litre of oil. Is this just some moisture or could it be something else?
Pressure indicator is ok, done another 40 miles and got another litre of oil and checked and put 1/2 of that in, no more yellow sludge apparent?

I think a small amount of yellow sludge in the filler tube and cap is commonplace. Just condensation I believe. I get a bit after three or four thousand miles, and wipe it out but it slowly comes back.

BTW chaps, I was in Costco yesterday and they had Mobil One at £23 inc VAT. Seemed reasonable, although I don't use it myself.
