996 owner needing guidance on number plate light fitting replacement

I am posting here as I am led to believe that the later 996s (2002 onwards) share the number plate light fitting with the 997 (among other models).

Last Friday, a replacement for a broken number plate light fitting arrived in the post (ordered from Design 911) so I thought I would quickly fit it before the weekend in case I took the car out. The existing one was clearly broken as it kept dropping down from the bumper.

Unfortunately, I hit a snag trying to disconnect the wiring and this coincided with the Club Forum being down for the platform upgrade, so I resorted to posting on the 911uk forum instead (post http://911uk.com/viewtopic.php?p=1023224#1023224).

I have now managed to disconnect the wiring, but when I try to put the new fitting up into the bumper, there just doesn't seem to be enough space to manoeuvre the fitting far enough to the right to fit the fixed lugs on the left inside the bumper to then push the right side up so the spring clip clicks into place. It is the spring clip that is getting in the way, perhaps that is why it was broken on the original fitting in the first place?

The car is a 2003 MY 996 coupé, so the number plate light fittings are the same as the 997 apparently, not like the ones on the early 996s.

Has anyone else had experience of fitting this type of number plate light fitting and if so, are there any tips for how to manoeuvre it into place? I wondered if the screws holding the lens and bulb were fouling anything, so I removed these and tried that approach but it made no difference.

I am attaching a picture showing the broken fitting out of the bumper for reference. The replacement fitting came in a box with a Porsche part label which shows the part number as 99763162002.

Help!

The part number that is shown for that assembly starts 997. Now unless someone knows better, Porsche did not use part numbers starting 997 on any variant of 996. So it must be the wrong part and maybe Design 911 are mistaken.

There are 3 listed for a 2005 996.

964 631 620 00 Licence plate light
964 631 620 01C (Black)
997 631 620 00

Looks like you need the 964 version. [;)]

Regards,

Clive.

I had looked at the parts list in the rear bumper section and not found the light, hadn't realised that it was in a later section. I had also been searching for "number plate" rather than "license plate", so that had stopped me from finding the right place too!

In the remarks column, it shows "-01" for part number 964 631 620 00, and "02-" for part number 997 631 620 00 for the Carrera (my car is a Carrera 2).

My interpretation of that is that for the 2-wheel drive Carrera 2002 model onwards, it is the part number beginning 997 that is required. However, the part that I have been supplied has "02" at the end not "00", so perhaps I have been sent the wrong part, even though it appears to be identical to the one that is fitted to the car.

I shall get in touch with Design 911 to see if there is a fault in their description of the part and that it isn't suitable for this model and year of car.

I could have just taken it to Autostrasse, the independent we use for all our servicing and maintenance requirements, but wanted to replace the broken part myself, but am beginning to wish I hadn't bothered!

Nick is right - PET shows the part as a 997 number for the 996. Probably updated since the introduction of the 997.

The 964 part is still listed, but it is for the 996 C4S, which must be different in some way.

Managed to install the new number plate light fitting at lunchtime, it was quite easy in the end. I used a wide flat bladed screwdriver to give some leverage on the side with the lugs (left side, pushing towards the right), this compressed the spring clip on the right side sufficiently to allow me to push the left-hand end with lugs up into the hole. Removed the screwdriver, then pushed the right hand end up and it clicked into place.

Tested the lights and all working perfectly.
