996 PCM 1 Map / software updates

Hi Aaron,

You need to check whether yours is the 8bit or 16bit unit.

OPC supply these disks as an extornionate rate and dont seem to be that current.

There have been lots of discussions regarding using Vauxhal disks I seem to remember of the site, but they only work with 16bit PCM1's.

SatNav Shop I believe!

On a 1998 car, you will have First Generation (8 bit) PCM1.

Porsche sell a map set for PCM1 (2008/9) Part number 000.044.900.96 but you are looking at £410. If you decide to take the plunge, double-check that it is suitable for your car.

Hi Aaron, have a look on ebay I obtained the latest CDs at a very reasonable price. There are quite a few people selling. Some are kosher and some may not be.
You may have to uodate the software as well but any decent seller will guide you through that. I used a guy called ttnuts but that is not a recommendation but I have had no issues with the CD I bought. Regards

Stirring up the old questions again, but how on earth can Porsxhe justify over £400 for map software on an out of date unit?

Not really supporting older customers really in my opinion. :(

£400 would buy you a considerably better in car system from an alternative manufacturer

Saying that, will check out eBay

Hi Moss. try ttnuts2009@gmail.com.or ttnuts09@ymail.com

To find out what version of software you have, if you press "Main" and "Trip" together on your Sat Nav unit, while it is switched on, the top line should tell you your software version.
Best regards

thanks for info, ive emailed him, as for checking version, I dont have a trip button ? i have main, but no trip ?

You have PCM1 (16 Bit). PCM1 was made by Siemens, and is a totally different system to PCM2, which was made by Becker. Therefore the software version Terry refers to doesn't apply for you.

As I said on 911UK, but for the benefit of other chaps on here with PCM1 16 Bit, there are 2010 maps available.

There is a seller on eBay here: <LINKY>

cheers fella, double posting [8|] on different forums I am ! yeah I see that seller, he seems the only one doing it, im a tight git, spend 20k on a car but wont spend 100 quid on a disc ! im after grabbing a back up off someone, unless of course each disc is serial numbered ?

No problem Martyn.

I think there is some confusion about hardware and software versions here, so I thought it might be a good idea to try to clear it up for the benefit of others.

If your car is March 2001, then it should be the PCM1 16-bit version.

They built two HARDWARE versions of PCM1. The head unit was made by Becker, and the navigation drives were made by Siemens. The earlier versions are "8-bit" and have a different navigation drive (the CD slot under the unit) to the later "16-bit" version like yours. You can't read a 16-bit disk in an 8-bit drive. The good news for you is that you can actually get cheaper maps for 16-bit. The only map available for the older 8-bit systems has to come from Porsche at £400/set!!!

PCM2.0 systems were made by Becker, and all have the same hardware, with the navigation drive built in to the head unit. However, they have different SOFTWARE versions of the operating systems. The software can be updated using a special update CD, and to run the latest maps the software has to be updated.

(Edited for clarity).

Hi Richard... You obviously know what you are talking about.. But now im confused.

My 911 is a 02 car, I believe it has a PCM 1 system in it, The head unit has a cassette player, and the Nav CD unit is a seperate drive below..

I thought my system was made by Becker???

I assume it is definatly a 16 bit system, is there a way i can find out what level software and/or maps I have ?

Regards
Gary

It must be a pre-September 2002 car. (The dates in the table are USA format). It is definitely PCM1 as it has the separate nav drive, and will be Second Generation (16-bit). PCM1 navigation unit was made by Siemens. The map date and version should be printed on the CD.

Just found this on RennTech:

The software version can be displayed by pressing the bottom right knob with A/C screen displayed. It will show something like:

PCM/IDIS V5.43
Nav Software Ver PONA642D
