996 PSE Sport Exhaust

I have a 98R 3.4 996 and have just had a used PSE fitted with the hope of my car sounding more like a traditional air-cooled 911.

A little dissappointed, still doesnt sound like an older one, it sounds more like a noisy exhaust that is blowing a bit. [&o]

[X(]Anyone tell me (on this limited info) if this is correct?

Cheers,

Rob

PSE won't make your 996 sound like an air-cooled car.

It should, however, give the car a much nicer and sportier tone - not quite like a Ferrari 360, but close. Everyone who has PSE seems to be very impressed, although it no doubt works better with the 3.6 engine.

Apparently, there is a 'settling in' period of about 200 mls.

Rob, Hi there I think I was the one that pointed out your RMS problem at brands sorry to hear that it has got worse, but hope you are now sorted.

Sports exhaust .......... I have been messing about with the exhaust on my car for sometime now with the intention of offering sports boxes on an exchange basis, part of this fiddling included buying a used sports system like you, however there are at least 2 if not 3 variations on these, the later ones sound awsome, wheras the early ones like we have are to be honest a bit of a disapointment, nice but not brilliant, Im thinking of selling mine and putting back on my moded system because although the factory one is slightly better its not £600 better !!
If you can find one you could try a later system, or sell yours and try one of mine and have a nice holiday on the difference !!!

Regards

Hi Paul,

Thanks again for pointing out the RMS problem, it did stat smoking badly after a good track session but doesnt do it on the road at all.

Have spoken to a few dealers but will probably get it done by a Porsche mechanic privately.

The mechanic fitted the sports exhaust which is used and is apparently an original Porsche unit.

I know it wasnt going to sound like an older car or even my old 964 but something more sporty but it just doesnt sound right. I have only been round the block in it so I need to get used to the different sound and see what I think.

BTW, exhausts do settle in. A new exhuast will have a different sound to when they have built up deposits of dirt and carbon on the inside and out rather than NEED to bed in like brakes or tyres...

Perhaps the aural effect on your system is dimished by the fact that it is not new, and will have quietened down, now that it has a bit of carbon soot in it?
Far fetched, I know. I had a PSE demonstrated to me recently, and I thought the difference was more pronounced outside the car than in. Get the revs up above 5000, then you will hear the difference inside!

It is conceivable that the slightly altered mapping adopted for the higher octane Optimax might contribute to a different exhaust note. Is it louder, or more resonant? Could you tell the difference on a standard system? Mind you, a PSE is probably cheaper than Optimax over five years!

I would say a bit of both and also I went from quite Ultimate to Noisy Optimax. It was very noticable after a couple of tanks...
