996 service costs per annum? 2k realistic ?

Hi there,

Im considering very serious in aquiring a 996TT but today a dealer told me off - said that the car eats miles as fast as it eats pounds ( sterling... ) on servicing.

I've always read that the 996 shares the same block as the lemans GT1 and even than the GT3 MKI - a very strong one, so they are pretty much reliable if properly mantained.

The car I'm considering is supposedly due soon ( on the summer ) for a major service, its under OPC warranty and I would like to service it there to extend the warranty again, so I was considering these costs :

£ 1024 - major service
£ 124 - change brake fluid
£ 15 - top up oil
£ 254 - check geometry yadada

thats adds up to circa £1400, inc vat - these are OPC quoted prices ( found on the webpage ).

so 2, or 2.5k is a realistic value to keep a 996TT per annum or not ? excluding the 900 for extending warranty ? should I stick to a C4S with lower prices in servincing ( plus the car costs few grand less, giving me more "room" to spend on service ) ?

advice needed from 996tt owners ( or ex owners ) and from other 996 "normal" , ie non tt, owners which can share their anual budget ( exclude trackday costs, tires, etc etc, since I'll do a couple this year but not much more than that ). Sorry for the cross posting ( I posted in the 911 turbo section as well ) but I would really like the feedback from non tt owners as well ! cheers

Thanks in advance

I don't have either TT or C4S, but I would expect the increased service costs of the TT would be offset by the lower depreciation.

Read the running reports at the top of the forum - it will give you a pretty good idea of what we are spending on a variety of cars.

I would count tyres as something to budget for as a servicing cost, something like Michelin Pilot Sports will only last about 10k miles and will cost hundreds of pounds to replace. Costs will obviously vary depending upon any particular issues with the car you buy (not everything is covered by the warranty) and the mileage you put on it (at higher mieage you may need 2 services in a year).

Hope this helps.

Hi

Mine is normal 996 C2, but for what it is worth, this is what is has cost me in the last 2 years and I have covered 23,000 miles

Insurance £660 per year
Tax £200 (going up of course) per year
Major service (plus bits) with an Indy £850
Minor service (plus bits) with an Indy £500
Front lower suspension bushes £200.
No tyres yet, but backs are due this year.
New sports exhaust (£1,500), not needed, my choice.

and that is it.... Diesel's point is a good one though on depreciation. As a normal 996 C2 I have probably lost around 10k on the sticker price over the last 2 years. TT's should hold far better.

Cost aside, I cannot put a value on the pleasure it has given me over the last 2 years. Good luck!

i believe that the 996 turbo and gt3 cars use a GT1 derived engine. not sure about the others though. would be interested to know if i'm right.

go to a porsche specialist for servicing for big savings over opc and better service.

Yes, you are correct. The others use the M.96 engine designed specifically for the 986/996.

Paul (PShore) - that's an expensive indy! Mine charges £155 for a minor, £265 for a 24000, and £365 for a 48000.

IMO on a car of that age I don't think it makes a bit of difference. Any potential buyer is going to be an enthusiast, and the majority of them will realise that an indy will do just as good a job as an OPC. Just choose a known independent that you are comfortable with, preferably from recommendation. You won't get palacial showrooms and reception areas - just good, honest service at a fraction of the price. You'll save a packet. Just my 2p's worth.

Hi

My tt costs about the same as my 993 to maintain (at OPCs) - so not a ridiculous amount. I just had a major service at an OPC and the cost was £1,400 inc VAT, including about £300 of extras agreed as we went on. The warranty on top was £895, which is fantastic value. Bits are slightly more expensive than 996 bits, but only by 15-20%.

I think after 2004 TT's also went to 2 year service intervals...?

The indy route is definitely appealing but I've kept basic servicing at the OPC for convenience and getting the warranty renewed. I agree with Richard that the residual shouldn't be hurt by an indy doing the services - I'll definitely get Northway to do brakes, shocks, etc. as and when they're needed.

You managed to get over 23000 miles from a set of tyres?

Well I hope that over next week I have my trade finalized and will be a proud owner of a 911 turbo. we'll see, just waiting for the PPi now.

in regards of the servicing costs, I allocated something around 3.5k, seems more realistic and covers any "wow, does it really need to replace that ?". or so I hope :)

was hard to find a good 911 turbo with top notch servicing intervals and careful owner, hope to keep it that way .) thaks to all that contributed to this thread !
