996 short shift kit

Well I actually fitted a short shift kit today and I really am extremely impressed.

The main kit was based on what I believe to be a quite cheap Chinese kit where the overall finish and anodising is nice but the bushes are aweful with terrible tolerances and materials. An engineer from another UK forum takes this kit and engineers bushes to 0.05 tolerances and with high quality materials (solid oilite bearing and phosphor bronze bushes) transforms it into an excellent product.

The best bit though is how it works, it is quite simply transformational. The gear shift in my 996 was at best sloppy and at worst reminicent of the 915 gearbox I had in my old 911 SC in the eighties. Now it is like a rifle bolt action, couldn't be more pleased!

Sounds like a great outcome.

Might be an idea to say where you purchased it and how much you paid so that it might helop other 996'ers.

The person in question doesn't do this commercially he does it as a favour to other enthusiasts so I didn't feel it would be correct for me to add detail. I will however ask.

When I bought my car from 911Virgin, the previous owner had installed another SSK, which I felt was better than the standard long throw unit, but a little too notchy between 1st & 2nd for my liking when cold, & had small amount of slop from side to side. I replaced it with one of Alex's SSK units (I suspect the OP has the same one) & I'd agree it's transformed the shift feel, & is now a joy to use.

Yup it's one of Alexs' :p

I could post a link to the original thread that started it but I don't know the rules here on cross forum posting.

I recently had the 997 SSK fitted to my '03 996 cab. As the video above shows it is very precise, like a rifle bolt. Supply and fitting was about £250 from my aptly named local independent Nine Excellence.
