996 short shift

Can anyone give me some feedback on short shift gear levers? I'm wanting to fit one, just wondered if there was any marked improvment over origional gear change.

You'll get 'short shrift' by posting this in the Display Register section.

996 section would be better? [;)]

As with all things it is subjective
some people dont like the stiffness that goes with a short shift
I had the original shift on my c2 and have short shift on my turbo when i got in the turbo I actually thought it was a race shift,it just feels like that
from start up third is always the stiffest gear once the gearbox is warm it is great,I like it it makes the car feels more puropseful IMHO
there was a lot of navel gazing on the american sites about how they reckoned the short shift would wear out the linkage I think thats is a load of balls
Porsche are bloody clever engineers, and I have never had a problem when i first got the car the thing I really noticed was the change up from 2nd to 3rd, in the c2 I had never noticed but you do have to be a little more deliberate and not hussle the lever to 3rd with the short shift but have a slight pause to allow the lever to centralise and then push forward.(Tony Wright explained that to me)In fact I was so disconcerted I thought there was a problem with the shift and after trawlling the american sites I opted to raplace my factory 996 shift with a factory 997 short shift .The bottom line was there is no differance I just needed to get used to the differance.10,000 fast miles later I wouldnt go back.Just be aware that initisally as the throw is shorter and the length of the lever is less more inital force is required to use it this makes it much more positive in feel ,but as I saw when the box is properly warmed up and you are pushing on it is fine.I still have my factory short shift for the 996 it is in mint condition if you are interested i have pictures drop me a pm I had been meaning to get round to putting it on the for sale list

Last year I fitted the 997 standard gear shift kit into my 2004 C2 in place of the standard 996 gear shift.
Superb improvement, without excessive increase in effort or notchiness & "only" £115 inc Porsche Club discount from the local OPC.
Shift travel is reduced by a measured 15 ~ 17% ( 10mm reduction in travel between Neutral & 3rd & Neutral to 4th).

A big advantage over some of the aftermarket kits is that it comes fully assembled in the shifter housing, with no need to destroy any standard components to fit it (so if you don't like it or want to swop it it another car you can just re-fit the original).

Obviously the effort to change gear also increases by the same 15~17% - but feels OK / acceptable - even through winter when the gearbox / linkage is cooler & lubricants are "stiffer".
I think the effort to change gear with some of the more extreme kits could be become wearing after a while - but I've not tried them.

Happy hunting !

Just fitted one to my fast road / track car,
Superb action once set up correctly, its not possible to use the factory tool for adjustment of the cables, but once they are set up,gives a superb short action.
1st to 2nd can be difficult from cold, but no different than before conversion, other than the travel is shorter, which gives the illusion that the actual change is more difficult.
