996 stereo upgrade keeping factory Bose optical

radial

Hi all,

I’ve been trying to upgrade my factory PCM2.0 since it had a little short and died, but so far I’m still pulling my hair out after hours of trying to get it to work.
i have a 2004 996 C4S cab.

I have a Pioneer DAB130 double din unit (https://www.pioneer-car.eu/eur/products/sph-da130dab) with the Connects2 CT51-PO04 (https://connects2.com/Product/ProductItem/CT51-PO04). Although that connector harness says for the 997 in many places, it appears as mine is an 04 996 that I have a lot of parts that are also in the 997... i.e. optical connections between phone, amp and cd changer.

Sp I’ve connected it up to the vehicle harness, connected that adapter harness to the standard harness that comes with the radio, plugged it into the radio, and also plugged in the dual aerial feeds to a Connects2 aerial adapter.

However, nothing happens when I turn on the ignition.

I’ve checked that I have voltage at the back of the radio which I do. I’ve checked the wiring looks right according to the supplied diagram. I’m at a bit of a loss.
Ive also checked all the fuses in the fuse box in the drivers footwell just to make sure they are all goo, which they are.

Surely these adapters are wired correctly so I don’t need to start cutting and joining wires.

Any thoughts?

I think your problem might be that the black power plug on the Porsche loom does not contain an ignition switched supply - hence the unit won't fire up. The ideal place to take a switch feed from is to splice into one of the orange wires from the bridge plugs (on the back of the relay board in the footwell). The easiest option is to use a fuse tap on one of the fuses in the fuse box in the driver's footwell (that is ignition switched).

Thanks Richard. I'll go take a look at this tomorrow and report back.

Ok having a look at this and I can see that I actually have two additional wires and perhaps one slightly different to the diagram.
see the attached photo of my loom connected to the adapter harness.
At the moment, just waiting for Connects2 support to get back to me as they say it should be plug and play.
will update again when I know more.

Update here now I have completed the work and it sounds AWESOME!

Now i've done all the work I am really please I did. It sounds absolutely fantastic. Much better than it did with the old PCM2.0 head unit and thats all I changed. I am still running the factory amp and speakers.

Some notes for anyone wanting to do this....
- I have a 996 C4S from 2004 with a factory Bose system with the amp located in the spare wheel bay in the front
- Had the PCM2.0 double din sat nav unit originally
- I installed a Pioneer SPH-DA130DAB but most of this is the same for any unit
- I used the Connects2 CT51-PO04 adapter (Amp on is used to connect to the accessory on blue wire on the head unit. Sub on in the adapter is not needed as the sub comes on with the amp in the Bose system). The speed signal on the back of the head unit is not used as that signal is already wired directly to the amp from the car.
- No that is not a typo, I did use the Connects2 CT51-PO04. The one listed for the 996 is the CT51-PO02 BUT I think late in the production cycle of the 996, some 997 parts started getting added and thats potentially why I have a 997 style wiring setup.
- To get sound to work you need to connect the AMP ON connection from the Connects 2 box to the blue/white wires on the back of the head unit. They trigger the Bose amp to come on and bingo you have sound.
- I also used the Connects2 CT27AA76 Fakra diversity antenna kit. Antenna connectors are the Black Fakra and Mustard Fakra connections (teal is the GPS)
- I am not sure I needed the diversity adapter in reality as it works just fine with only one of the antenna connected so you could get the cheaper CT27AA14
- I still had to manually run a feed for ignition power to get the unit to turn on as the 996 doesn't have an ignition feed at the radio. I used a fuse tap on the phone system fuse (B8) in the fusebox for this so it was non-destructive.
- As a fitting kit I used the Connects2 CT23PO02 with a 996 specific surround. Quality isn't amazing of the facia but it works... just be gentle with the tabs that hold it on to the frame.
- I ran the microphone up and into the stock mic location in the right side of the instrument cluster. If you have phone prep you can just pop the factory mic out (keep it though as they are worth £90) and use the cover you already have. I stuck it in with thin double sided tape. If you have a blank you need the mic cover. I ordered 99655262602C53 as I have grey interior but your's will be slightly different if you have black
- I opted to connect the park brake cable into a permanent ground because I couldn't be bothered to find the right wire and it's not really needed.

DAB
- I fitted a DAB antenna to the inside of the windscreen on the passenger side.
- Power was taken from the same fuse tap as the head unit but you can also power some antenna's from the head unit if it supports it and that saves you running another wire.

Reverse Camera
- I also fitted a Pioneer ND-BC8 reverse camera.
- For that I ran the wires from the back bumper to the head unit. I put a waterproof connector in line at the bumper so it can easily be disconnected when the bumper is removed.
- I also took a feed from under the drivers seat to the head unit as I have memory seats and the control modules dip the mirror when in reverse so I used that to activate the camera also.
- Power for the camera was taken from the same fuse tap as the head unit.

If you have any questions please just drop me a message or post here. :)

Just adding some more info here for those also trying this.
Attached is a wiring diagram of the factory radio showing all the connections and where they go. It helped me quite a lot.

Hi, I have gone down the same route as you, stereo, connects2 setup and the fakra connection in a 2003 996 Targa. I have wired in the ignition live and the stereo powers on but I have no sound. Got the bose optical setup. You mentioned the Amp On should be connected to the blue wired on the head unit. Tried that and had no joy. Do we need to connect the two RCA connectors to the rear of the stereo? And should the mode be standard or network when running through the setup on the stereo?
Appreciate any advice.

Hey there,
Great to hear someone has managed to find some use in my little post :)
A few things spring to mind...
  1. Which Connects2 adapter did you use? As a 2003 perhaps the 002 is the one you need not the 004 that I used in my 2004 car?
  2. On the back of my stereo I had two blue wires with female bullet connector ends for turning on an amp and sub and a vaguely remember switching things around until I got it to turn on but can't remember how.
  3. In my photos I do have two RCA leads plugged into my stereo yes. I can't see what they were for though.
  4. As for standard vs network mode, I am not sure. I assume that is a stereo specific setting as I don't remember having to do anything like that on mine.
Hope some of that helps. Let me know how you get on and if I can help any more I will.

Hi Rad,

I went with the CT51-PO02 initially, but replaced it with the CT51-PO04. The difference between the two is mainly that the 04 has an optical connection, the 02 does not.

I went with the same stereo as you as you had done the majority of the hard work there, thank you. Reading the manual there are three pairs that can be swapped around, two red, two yellow and the blue ones. The red and yellow appear to be power related so I will try messing with the blue ones and see how I get on. I may contact Connects2 as you did regarding the ignition power issue for the sound issue and see how I get on.

Thank you again for replying with the extra info, I'll drop an update here once I get things sorted out,

Dair

All done and working. So the final connection is from the CT51-PO04 wiring labelled AMP ON to the white and blue wires in the Pioneer head unit. There are bullet connectors but also a wire labelled REMOTE CONTROL joined to one bullet.

Thanks again for the advice, now to route the dab ariel and mic.

Good work! And now you've said that I remember doing that. I'll add it to the guide above now.
Enjoy the tunes! :)

I made a little video about my stereo, why it needed changing and how I did it. The guide above is good but I realised that this video has a lot more info because you can see what I'm doing. It's not my best work, just starting out on YouTube, but its hopefully useful!
