996 targa roof rack bars ?????

i have a 2002 911(996) targa and am looking for roof rack bars
to carry a surfboard or mountain bikes (with a bike carrier on the bars)

it is for occasional use only

anyway porsche claim to sell one but having specially ordered
it it didnt fit as well as beng metal onto metal - the targa has no
fixing points so the rack grabs the roof sills - it was also vv expensive

they have not been very helpful since

i have not fouind any other rack company which makes anything which
fits the 996 targa

so my questions are

1 has anybody got a porsche rack for 996 targa that fits and they are happy with ?

2 has anybody found an alternative roof rack that works ?

3 is there a rear slung bike carrier which fits the targa ?

4 has anybody carried a surfboard with softracks on a 996 targa
(and not had it fly off on the m-way) ?

thanks in advance - any help gratefully received - ill respond swiftly to any questions

Welcome majordom!

There is quite a complicated-looking fitting procedure for the Targa Roof Transport System. Did they supply you with instructions? If not, drop me an email and I'll send you details.

Sorry, I can't help with alternatives - maybe someone else has some experience........

thansk for response

myself and the porsche dealership mechanic were unable to fit one of the bars - i am sure it is simply
the wrong size

plus it was a metal clamp direct onto roof sill which i am not happy with - there may be
a part missing but nobody really knew

the supplied instructions were rubbish - they would have put IKEA to shame

the 2 bars and 2 bike carriers would be 700 quid !

for that price they should work perfectly - if they did i would pay

top of the range thule would be about 250 !!

I suspect (like you suggest) there are parts missing - metal on metal (paintwork) is not what Porsche would do. While they are expensive, they are very well engineered, nice pieces of kit. (Although I've never seen the 996 Targa version)

thanks i think they never properly developed one for the targa (which lacks the fixing points)

ps i have a Blur LT - santa cruz rules !

Here's the cover sheet an parts list from the TSB (P1 of 6), although it sounds like you have ruled it out as an option:

the instructiosn i had were nothing like that - it was a series of badly photocopied
sheets in 6 badly translated languages

i think it was missing D the rubber pads

please do you have the full 6 pages or where can i find them ?

thanks i appreciate the help

Agreed - except, after millions of miles of very rough terrain over 7.5 years, the rear triangle has developed a metal fatigue split just above the main barring[]. Luckily the importer still has two left from that year and one is currently in the post... definately had my money's worth from it!

receibved them - thanks - much more detailed than the supplied instructions

definitely was misisng the rubber spacers but still sure one bar was wroing length
ill go back to dealer and we will try again

anyone ever actually used these or found a better/cheaper alternative for 996 targa ?

thanks guys

its taken a while but the people at the reading tech centre have finally set up and adjusted
the cross bars and now they fit really well and are fairly easy to get on and off

now i have to get the bike racks coz they got sent back tot he wharehouse !

if member richard hamilton has the tech docs for these i would be most grateful

Pleased to hear you got it sorted. I have the info on the Tequipment bike carrier Part Number 000 044 000 52. Drop me another email if you'd like a copy.

well i got the MTB carriers and used them today (to chicksands dual slalom)
they are really well designed and solid an easy to use as well as put on/off

and porsche gave me a discount for delay and messing me around [:D]
just made them expensive rather than ludicrous [8D]
still bettter than getting a van []

thanks to richard and everyone else for this great forum
