996 to 993

I know this is a perennial question but...

Has anyone made the switch from 996 to 993 and regretted it OR think it was the best decision ever?

I have a low mileage 2003 C2 which is immaculate and fun to drive but I am being called by the 993's' sirens! I have seen a few (starting to get expensive) and keen to give it a go. My commute is a lot shorter than it used to be, I feel I need something a little 'purer' and more mechanical if that makes sense, and they look SO good!

So, I have read the buyers guides and know what to look out for but more than that I would like to hear from previous 996 owners on how they feel about making the swap...[:)]

Cheers,

Mark

Hi Mark, I recently had to downgrade from my GT3 to a 993 C2 (RS copy), and had a std 996 before that.

A few thoughts, car is a lot smaller, the 993 interior wise seems very dated at times the dash is fabulous but door cards and center console seem a bit shall we say old hat.
Car performes and brakes very well on track and is not the embarrasment I thought it would be after the 410 bhp before.
Running costs a bit early to tell but cant see being much different to the 996, and some OPC have deals on the older stuff.
The 993 is the best looking 911 in my opinion and prices are holding or climbing a little for nice examples.
The 996 can only go one way ............... and you have the potentially bankrupting cost of a replacement motor should you be unlucky enough to suffer any of the engine problems, although I think by 2003 these were sorted especially on the 3.6 motor.

In a nutshell .......... 993 with a black interior !

Thanks for the quick reply Paul....

Any thoughts on the Camtune c2s in stock right now? I am seeing it in an hour!

Mark,

I have no idea about their current stock, but Camtune usually only do very good quality.

Make sure you talk to either Tim or David in the workshop about any car you look at (and not just the salesman!). Those two know 993's inside out and are always happy to give advice, feedback etc. Oh, and tell them John said hi!

Cheers/John

Hi Mark

I bought my first Porsche in 2002, a new 996 4S, although thrilled with my purchase it was not as exciting to drive as my previous Porsche driving experiences, 964 and 993. Also, I was never sure about the front end, the headlights never seemed right to look at, too much like a Boxster, not true 911.

I then purchased a new 997 S, when they first came out, only kept this 4 months, although a stunning looking car, it was, if one can dare to say, too comfortable to drive. Great interior and really well designed and built, but once again, not so exciting as previous Porsche driving experiences.

After 12 months 'Porscheless', I decided to purchase the car I had always wanted, a 993 Carrera S. It's one of the best looking cars ever designed, and I love it! It may be a bit old hat inside, it may not have the technology of the latter day cars, but it's wonderful...and it just feels right!

I paid £44000 for it in 2006 with 6000 miles on it, it's absolutely mint, and it's now only got 8600 miles on it. I know some might say, it's meant to be driven, but it's also a piece of art...and I get as much pleasure out of looking at it as I do driving it.

Best decision ever, so bite the bullet and go for it! You won't be disappointed!

Kind regards

Did you buy? (I got mine from Camtune - about 7 years ago though!)

Thanks for all the replies...

I went to see the car and was seriously disappointed to be honest! When I opened the door the seat fabric was coming away from the hard backs, easy enough to tuck back in but surprising on a car sitting there at £35k! There are scuffs front and rear, the sunroof switch practically fell off when I touched it but on start-up it sounded wonderful!

They are selling on behalf of the owner which means no negotiation and pure commission for them....not the best way to buy! It was tucked behind another car so no test drive (I suspect they are very nervous as it is not 'their' car)....

All in all pretty demoralising experience but I am pretty determined to get one as the interior does not bother me at all and they just look fantastic! I know what you guys mean by 'agricultural', its not to 'dis' the car but simply adds to the whole 'mechanical' experience that I miss with the 996 which is so competent in all areas....too easy I guess!

The search continues.....if anyone wants to go the other way let me know, my car is immaculate [:D][:D]
