996 to Boxster S

I have itchy feet just now. (Have also been thinking of a 993.) We have recently re-organised our "fleet" and arguably I could now get away with a two seater.

Has anyone made the transition from a 996 to a Boxster S?

What are your thoughts?

I remember doing a Lovetts Driving Day at Castle Combe. This was attended by a existing customers and there was a selection of 996s and Boxsters that were available to be driven on track (accompanied by racing instructors). I well remember how popular the Boxster S was amongst 996 owners and one chap, who had a 996 TT on order, was seriously contemplating changing it to a Boxster S.

I have a 996 C2 and my wife has a Boxster S (her third Boxster), so I think I can be objective. Both are great cars. But, if the choice was down to one car, I'd rather have a 996 Coupe than a Boxster S, but I'd rather have a Boxster S than a 996 Cab.

There is a very good selection of used Boxster Ss for under £30,000. At those prices, £ for £ they are a fantastic buy.

The Boxster design package is very clever and surprisingly practical. Other options for a 'second' Porsche could be a 911 CS or 964 RS

OK shall try not to bore the ars* of ya Spizz ... Here goes [8|] 1978-1997 owned 4 dare I say proper air cooled 911's...911SC Targa..911 SC Cabrio ... 911 Carrera Cab and finally 911 Speedster ... I was a die hard 911 owner and figured I would stay that way false stop.... Fast forward to 1997 Boxster time [8D][8D] Like you I didn't need 4 seats and I was fortunate enough to be able to keep my Speedster and put my toe in the Boxster waters etc. To stick to my opening promise not to bore you too much I am now on my 4th Boxster.

In June 2001 I was loaned a 996 C2 Coupe for a week and 600 miles. At the end of the week I was dreading giving it up as I feared I might find the Boxster a bit of a disappointment []

I mile back in the Boxster and I concluded that the 996 was a fantastic car but apart from the torque and the music its engine could make in every other key area ie ride quality, handling, braking, steering, gear change, clutch feel, nimbleness, fun factor, cost, the Boxster had it's older, far more compromised design wise, brother totally whooped IMO :ROFLMAO:

Best test is try and organise the loan of a Boxster for a few days and draw your own conclusions.

£ for £ one has to ask how Porsche can really justify the difference but I must add my personal views are based purely on my passion and pride of ownership for cars and not on price and outright performance....Good luck which ever way you jump you will still have a fine piece of engineering to play with
