996 tt Tyre sizing / wear?

Has anyone got any knowledge of changing rear tyre sizes from 295 up to 305. Does it make any difference?

I am down to 2mm on the rears in 5000 miles using Pirelli's! Is this fairly normal? It seems pretty poor to me on normal, "fast" [:D] road use, no trackdays. Sorry wife made me change the wording [8|]

It seems like you've tried hard [;)]
My contis only ever made 3k on the rears however it seems there may have been geometry issues involved.
Usually got/get 9-12K out of the rears and that was with Pirelli's.
I looked into up'ing the width of the tyre but seem to remember issues involving the 4wd system and creating problems for oneself..
I don't think you could get matching N numbers on all 4 tyres either [&:] if you stuck to 305 and Pirelli

Craig - Pirellis aren't known for their longevity - switch to Michelin, less noise, better grip, much better wear and they dont tramline once half worn like the Pirellis do. I reckon you'll get twice the life out of Michelins so the 20% extra cost is money well spent in the long run

Thanks,

I wanted to move to Michelins as I can get these alot cheaper and they should wear better, however Pirelli fronts have loads of tread left! So probably best left untill I reach a point where all four need changing. Will order Pirelli's 295, N3 compound early next week.

The tyre fitters are saying they won't put Michelins on the back without changing the Pirelli's on the front. Something to do with the 4x4 system and best practice. So I am stuck with another set of Pirelli rears untill the fronts wear or change the front Pirellis that have loads of rubber on them.

Thanks

Hi Craig,

Most people will advise not to mix tyres but some say its ok.

I have 315's on the rear but I have GT2 wheels, 12" instead of 11" on the rear.

You will be fine going to 305.
