996 Turbo Buying Advice

Hi gang - best break the ice on here!

I am starting to gear up for my 996 Turbo purchase and am gathering books, info, searching the 4 corners of the internet and visiting lots of independent dealers.

I have looked at higher mileage examples (70k +) a couple of which were in super condition with tons of history. Equally have found a couple that seem too low on miles for their age and condition.

Would you avoid the higher mileage stuff even if the car was in A1 condition with correct history?

The short answer is no.

Why, you should buy the car based on its condition, its service history and invoice history combined with matching MOT's.

For instance two cars say both 10 years old.
One you found a 60/70000 miles car with one or two owners and all its history, thats been serviced every year you know its been well looked after, the car will no doubt be very clean and well polished. The file will no doubt show whats been replaced and when i,e, brakes pads and discs, probably had radiators and a condensor, maybe a clutch, recent tyres. You can ask the current owner about the car and any issues.

Where as car 2 has had 5 owners serviced to schedule, not much in the invoice file, most of its MOT's and done 40,000 looks clean could do with a hoover. Your not sure if its had radiators, tyres how many sets of tyres, discs pads etc, This car is probably £3/4000 more.

I would prefer car 1.

So just keep looking and the more cars you see, the more you will learn and you will know the car when you see it.

Is it to be a daily driver or weekend toy? If you aren't going to pile on miles, the higher mileage car may be the sensible bet. I would generally agree with Gordon, but 5 owners in 10 years wouldn't put me off, provided it had a good service history, and a wadge of recent receipts. Receipts for items such as brakes over 2-3 years old aren't much use anyway. I'm sure you will know when you find one which has been loved. Get a decent PPI done, whatever.

Thanks chaps - smitten by a 2002 car with 83k on the clock but it has impeccable history and wants for nothing. Great spec to boot.

Car will not be a daily commute [:)]

Wasnt saying I wouldnt buy the 5 owner car, just giving two examples in time, ref brakes its dependant on the mileage and storage conditions and the whole picture.

Chris car should be £20 -£22k private and plus £2/3k from a dealer...........
